    homemade sump guard?

anybody tried making one for a 600?

I can't afford to buy one, I can weld steel but not ally & have plenty off cuts of steel lying around at work. With some fairly basic tools I reckon I may be able to cobble something together.

If any one's already tried Im looking for the pitfalls to avoid, what to fix to etc etc.

    sumpguards

I have made them in the past for trials bikes and they were just a smooth flat piece of alloy bent up at the front bolted on front and back (use countersunk bolts at the back to keep it smooth)
great for sliding over tree roots and rocks
fit a piece of sponge between the guard and bottom of the engine to stop rocks and a build up of mud.
It is only in recent years that the fashion for having sump guards that come 1/2 way up the side of the engine these are just welded on wings
If you cant weld Alloy its not expensive to have a local engineering shop weld them on for you

Thanks "Harrisphil" Noted the tip about countersunk bolts & the Sponge (not sure I'd have thought of that...). I can't weld alloy, but was thinking of doing it in stainless (cos it won't cost me anything & I can weld it meself). though I was wondering what sort of thickness to use.

3 or 4 mm? (less than 2 I can't weld more than 4 will be too lumpy & heavy I reckon).

    thoughts?

I'd say 2mm stainless would be ore than strong enough for general use.

I'll have to see if I can weld 2mm, or if I just blow holes in it, I can probably solder it (if that's the correct term) but I've less practise at that.

I'l probably try & make the first model (cardboard) this week sometime.
