    welcome John,
I'm down south of you, might see you sometime, Are the Ballybunion or Athea races on this year?
I'd think 800 for a ropey TA is a bit high but I'm constantly surprised at how much secondhand bikes make here, think of it this way, for "only" ten times that you'll get one out of the box.
If you can get good prices on the spares it might be worth it but even a top end rebuild on the alp is an engine out of the frame job which makes things harder,,,
good luck whatever you decide, maybe it's worth bargaining on.

Givi Top box and panniers. Laser Produro exhaust(original available).New
    tyres.New fork spring

Just wondering if there are many users here from Ireland, as I am considering buying a 1989 model Transalp 600v for €800. There are a few parts that I was told need replacing, I got a quote from a honda dealer:

    Front Right Fairing €114
    Indicator Repay €82.45
    1 off CDI Unit €308
Piston Rings €120 while open might do the pistons €220 extra
    Speedo Worm gear €28.65

Is this worth the money and the work involved, i dont mind the rebuild but dont want to go over board as honda are charging huge prices for parts. Is there any where else i can get the above parts cheaper and not at honda price tag?

Finally is there any concers or problems with this year and model bike?

    John

That bike sounds like a load of agro John but assuming your budget is limited, why not have a poke around eBay or breakers yards to see whether you can source the parts you need ?

As for the price, second hand TA's here in Ireland seem to bottom out price wise at a couple of thousand euro, once they're running. They can fetch stupid money, given the price of a new one.

I travelled up from Dublin to Belfast to buy mine, far better choice of bikes with a service history, almost unheard of down south.

Crashed bike - walk away quick ! Check out eBay or Biketrader in the UK . Bought my 2003 TA650 2 years ago on eBay, flew to UK, rode back , total cost with Flight/Ferry/VRT less than six grand , still worth about five grand now after 2 years . At the time similar bikes in Ireland were selling around the 7 grand mark. Remeember lots of bikes here are just importes anyhow, you're paying the dealers import costs PLUS his markup. Check magireland.org for an article on how to import a bike . Good luck !

I would go along with the consensus - you can probably find something better. I had a 1988 TA first and it was a nice bike but the brakes were attrocious, later twin disc or better still triple disc versions are much better. It is possible to repair the CDi units, although it's quite a business... I bought my current '99 TA in UK (I live in Kerry) and it worked out way cheaper than buying here in Irealnd.
By the way you just missed an ace weekend here Jollity Farm Fun Weekend

FatFergie.... the Athea races were last Sunday was going to go but..... didn't.

Yep, it was good There's a few of us round Kerry/Cork who go for ride outs at weekends as well once you get your bike...

bike? i have 2 push bikes that i have not taken out in 10years, could set that up.haha, full leathers out on a push bike.
my klx is having a few minor electrical probs, then once sorted a lad has paid a deposit on it. so a TA should be in order then and the steep steep learning curve begins. all going well once i get back from my trip to california i should be set up and ready to head out
