Indicators - on then off then on then off!!!

    Explain this then.....
    1. Engine off - indicators flash fine.
    2. Engine ticking over - indicators flash fine
    3. Engine revving above 3-4,000 rpm - indicators stop working
    4. But, switch on the lights or touch the brakes and indicators start working fine again.
    5. But, switching on only another circuit, like heated grips, and indicatiors still don't flash above 3-4,000rpm
    Puzzled. I am.

    Case Notes:
Flasher unit replaced about 6 weeks ago with a pattern part via Wemoto. Seemed to work OK, but as I always ride with lights on may never have noticed the problem. (old flasher just buzzed when switched and no illumination at indicator bulbs at all)

I left the igintion on and got a flat battery immediatley before I noticed this problem. Jump started via LR Discovery battery. Everything seemed fine. I only noticed the flasher problem coz I ran the bike without lights to ensure battery got as much charge as possible.

I also washed the bike and had the fairing and tank off on the day the battery went flat. So, possibly disturbed electrics (but I rseem to have to remove the fairing and tank about once a month and never had a prob before).

    Suggestions please.

It does sound like there is the wrong voltage going to your flasher..like if you are running leds... but really i have No Idea.. however i do have a spare flasher relay if you want to have that to see if it your flasher?

    That would be really helpful.

Can I buy it off you if it is the flasher unit? I will PM you my address.

Have no idea but, did you check to see if the flicker bulbs are all working? O boy, might I be the idiot now?

Just check and tell me if I am the idiot. I can deal with it.

    Austin,
I think it could be a bad earth or poor connection. Check the earth on the battery and on the starter motor.
I think there is a earth near the relay, check for continuity between the green terminal and black connector.
If no coninuity you have and open curcuit in the green wire. if you have continuity then is a loose or poor contact or a duff flasher unit.
I suspect it's the same problem which lead you to replace the old flasher relay, maybe.

that's not an italian made alp is it?

lektricks aren't my forte and I'm assuming you've checked and cleaned the relay contacts but it sounds like the relay to me.

    Carrying on from Steve.
I think it is a bad connection somewhere, I would try disturbing the wiring loom to the change the fault, to give you some idea of the location of bad connection.
Just leave the indicators on and generaly prod around, see if you can get them to stop working.

Yes, I am thinking its bad earth somewhere, but Xander is sending me a relay to try which should be here before the weekend. I won't be able to look at the problem 'til then, but keep the suggestions coming.

Oh, and yes it is an Italian made TA,and guess what the only problems I have everhad with it (touch wood) are electrical problems - well a couple of bulbs, the horn fuse keeps blowing, the flasher relay and now this.

(Now then, horn is on the same fuse as the lights.... could therebe a pattern developing here??).

    Best of luck with fault.
Wish I was doing your mileage, I only live 3 miles from work. I some times get up early just to add a few miles to the trip.

Was it blowing before you had problems with the relay? and what shape is your battery in?
