    Wheels

Having just completed the BMW off roading course in the Beacons in Wales, I'm now itching to get the 'Alp on a few fire roads around our local forests. Problem is, my Michelin Anakees, whilst brilliant in the pissy Irish weather, are not the tyres of choice for gravelly off roading. Ideally a nice set of TKC80s would fit the bill perfectly, but I'm loath to lose the grippy Anakees for everyday commuting work on the tarmac. What would be ideal would be another set of wheels for weekend off-roading which could be quickly changed on Sunday evening for the daily commute, has anybody done this, or is it just to horribly expensive to invest in another set of wheels ?.

    Give the Contis a go.

I think (even though I'm in California and its very dry right now) you'll be pleasantly surprised how good they are in the wet.

For riding the tarmac and just jumping off into the gravel or dirt, there is no better tire for the TA

I read in a bike mag (can't remember which one, it was at a friends house) recently that the anakees work quite well on gravel. Have you tried them yet?

I took the plunge and bought a second set of wheels for the KTM. It is expensive, but whether it is worth the money is up to you. I got mine from http://www.central-wheel.co.uk/

Budget for another sprocket and set of discs for the wheels because swapping them around everytime you want to change wheels is more trouble than a cart load of monkeys

Yeah, if you remember when we were trekking over the mountains at Gougane Barra, I went over a bit of grass on the road and nearly broke me neck. The attached photo is the kind of stuff that the TKC80s take in their stride, this is me holding on for dear life on the BMW course.

    Re: Wheels

Point taken, I thought about getting a second set myself about a year ago but good second hand wheels are like hens' teeth around here, probably because so many suffer from corrosion inside the rims.
On the other hand I've recently put on my first set of twinduros and they don't like the grass down the midddle much better than my tourances did. They seem fine on tarmac rain hail or shine, why don't you try them and see if you can live with them full time before you commit to a set of wheels. CbrPaddy can tell you about his karoos also.
Nice picture btw, what tyres did you have on there?

TKC80s, also rode with them on wet tarmac, obviously not as good as the Anakees, but not bad as long as you kept manners on your right hand, one chap wanted to see what his Xchallenge could do on tarmac and opened it up fully, he promptly lost the rear and ended up being highsided and painfully deposited on the road, therefore it would be nice to have a spare set of wheels for the weekend so to speak, but you're right, finding a set of wheels for the 'Alp is like trying to find a condom machine in the Vatican.

The cheepest way to get a set of spare wheels
is to buy another compleate transalp
