    Gaitors

I've got my bike sitting up in the air with the front wheel removed to fix the speedo drive (See my thread in Bike Tech).

My gaitors are split and I was wondering how hard a job it is to replace them...I've got a Haynes but that only describes their removal as part of a complete fork dismantle....is that necessary?

    Advice please chaps

You need to slide each fork leg down out of the yokes to replace the gaitors - quite an easy job if youve got the bike high enough and well supported.

    Re: Gaitors

Work on one leg at a time - undo the bottom 2 fork clamp bolts first, then supporting the fork, undo the top 2 bolts - the fork leg should slide out - it might be a tight fit - just twist and pull - once youve got them out, it may be worth changing the fork oil at the same time (as this goes off after a period of time - i think recommended change is every 2 years) and also check the fork seals for any leaks as you need the legs out to change them as well.

Study the manual and it will be a lot easier to understand

    Re: Gaitors

Try M&P for gaitors. No where near £60. I paid £15 from a local bike shop. They are standard MX / Endure type gaitors, you just need the right diameter and length for your machine.

Small note - when taking fork legs out of bike, if doing one at a time you'll need to remove the front mudguard and the metal brace under it before you can remove only one leg.
You could take both out together at the same time, but it can be a bit fiddly on yer own.

    Just my ramblings.

    Re: Gaitors

Remember too Cabby this area of your bike takes on a whole lot of stress/strain so make sure everything is tightened up correctly afterwards. You don't want to end up in A&E yourself, getting a pair of fork legs out of your nosrills do you?

    Re: Gaitors

Thanks Chaps...There's some Polisport ones available from a site called Motorcycle direct.....Maybe I'll give 'em a try but first I'll try the MX shop at the next roundabout up the A3 from me......

    YEAH !!.....A SHOP...A REAL LIFE ONE !!

Jack600 told me about it (never been in)

Thanks Soho....Methinks a torque wrench is in order....

Took the missus to one of those minor injury units instead of A & E......in and out in 30 mins....RESULT !!!!!

She's glued up and stitched and still alive

On the plus side I could get the One Armed Woman to assist taking both fork legs off together

    Re: Gaitors

    Gaitors arrived and fitted.

Some sort of rubbery material feels much better quality than the Honda original plastic..

    About £21 delivered fom here:
