Fixing plate wearing out really quickly.

I have a transalp (198 600cc and the fixing plate on the front sprocket wears out after 500 miles. Thats not right. Anyone got any ideas. I may have to get a new front sprocket, but it doesn't appear to be worn, or even moving.

Output shaft is wearing out, a fairly standard problem. In view of the bike's age I'd say sell it quick. A repair would cost more than the bike is worth. I had an '89 with this fault and I sold that one real fast.

    ****!
The shaft doesn't feel loose at all, but come to mention it, it has that 'ball bearing' whine a landrover has when it coasts in neutral.

Is it still safe to ride?

Sounds more like a chain alignment problem - it's the fixing plate that holds the front sprocket on the shaft that's wearing out, yeah?

If the front sprocket is on the right way round, check the rear one's on the right way round too, and then check that all spacers on the rear axle are in the right places. I'd put money on something being up, the front sprocket retainer should last the life of the bike, unless the output shaft got completely shagged. (to use a technical term...).
