Chain and Sprockets - which ones.....

I need to get new chain and sprockets and I am sure this has probably been done to death, but which ones?

Should I go to davidsilver.co.uk and get Honda's own kit or should I get a nice expensive uprated 'x' or 'o'ring chain - DID, TSUBAKI, Regina etc.

I will be putting on a scottoiler at the same time, new clutch plates/springs and cables allround (except braided hose was put on the front last service)

Last chain lasted about 4k and was a cheap 'x'ring , its still on there but has a tight spot.

Not worth trying to save a few pounds on a cheaper chain, as you've found out, they don't last as long as a quality one.

My first Transalp had a DID as standard (lasted 28,000 miles), I replaced it with a Tsubaki X Ring chain which was on it's way out after 10,000 miles.

The current Transalp is fitted with an RK chain as standard, which hopefully will be as good as the DID.

So I'd be tempted with getting my future C&S Kits from Silvers and sitting with the standard stuff.

Thanks Wheelie, I think I will go for standard but put a scottoiler on at the same time this time. I have heard good things about these.

In contrast to wheeliebin, my 02 Alp had an RK chain from new, it needed frequent, small adjustments, the last 2000 miles (coming home from the Stella last year) it went from a bit worn to completely fooked - scarily so....

I replaced with Genuine front sprocket DID gold 'X' ring and aftermarket rear.

The DID hasn't needed adjusting, despite a 4k trip to Italy and is IMHO a far superior chain to the RK.
BUT it is an expensive option.

Price a genuine kit from D.Silvers, original kits come with either DID or RK chain, unfortunately you cannot specify which at the time of ordering, original kits are suprisingly reasonable.

    Phil,

What is the best rear sprocket to get with a DID x chain. I know its a DID XVM525 118 link, also what is the standard sprocket size? Is the scottoiler going to make a massive difference I am lazy with chain lubing. BTW my bike only blasts around on roads/odd fast sprint over speed tables/humps. Haven't had the opportunity to offroad yet.

Hi BB, I cannot recall the std sprocket size on the 600s (its late & I can't be assed to look it up) for the rear sprocket I really don't think it's too improtant which you go for as it is three times the size of the front one, so spins 1/3rd the speed.

As for a Scott oiler, yes I think they are an improvement - milage wise it's impossible to say as there are so many variables. I find chains start to feel rough after about 150 miles after a lube without an oiler, if you commute in all weathers, I dare say a chain oiler will be even more beneficial.

    Cheers Phil,

I think it is a 47T on the back standard. So my shopping list will be Scottoiler - touring, DID XVM525 118 link, genuine honda 15t front sprocket, renthal rear sprocket (if they make one for transalp).

    Many thanks for the input.

Just a quick one on this, I've just ordered the genuine chain and spockets kit from Dave Silver, 65 quid at the moment, which I reckon is great value for money.

Same here. I have done nearly 20k miles on mine and it rarely needs adjusting.
