    Luggage Rack Wieght Limit

Can anyone here tell me the load limit on the luggage rack for an 05 onwards Transalp?

As some of you may know, the exact same luggage rack is used on the 125 Varadero, and that has a load limit of 5kg (My top box weighs 3.5 kg , leaving me with only 1.5 kg). I am not sure if this is because it is all the rack can take or if its all the bike frame can take. I seriously hope that the Transalp can take more 'cus I would like to be able to carry more than just a lunchbox in it when I get the Alp...

9kg the little sticker says, but I'm sure I've carried more than twice that without problems (the front-end does go a little light though).

Congrats on the forthcoming new bike

Generally speaking luggage rack weight limits exist for liability reasons - so you don't ride around with your pet elephant on the rack and then sue Honda because your bike became unstable and caused you to crash.

Common sense prevails, really - depends what else you're carrying, how/where you're riding etc. If you have trouble lifting whatever it is you want to carry onto the rack then it's probably too heavy. If your bike behaves strangely, slow down and don't carry so much next time I carry around 10-15kg (possibly a fair bit more some days) in a heavy Givi box on the rack every day, with a pillion, and haven't had any stability problems.

One thing worth remembering is that insurance companies will, in the event of a claim, try anything they can to get out of paying up. If you're carrying more on the back than the bike/rack is rated for and they can argue that this was a contributory factor......

I have succesfully taken a trip to Heathrow with myself, pillion and her (weighed) 25.5 kg suitcase strapped to the back rack, oh her hand luggage (magazines & stuff) was strapped on top of that too!

Like sproggy says, let common sense prevail.....

They are very strong - you can nearly lift the bike by it!

This is one of the big reasons I try to stay at least reasonably close to the wieght guidlines because I have seen how they screwed my mate out of alot of money over the most obscure of things

But thanks for all the responses guys, and now I know how much you lot have loaded on the back, I know what I intend to carry is easily achievable

I'm intrigued - what made you want to do this?
