Angry Blowing 30 Amp Main Fuse.

My XL600V 1999 has started blowing its 30 Amp main fuse and I cannot track down the source. The 1st time it happened I replaced the fuse and it lasted about 40 miles before it blew again. It will now blow one every few miles.

I have checked the loom for any shorts to frame, disconnected the heated grips but no go. In desperation to get myself home I put a bit of the heat shield tin foil from the inside of the battery cover across the blown fuse, I did get the 30 miles home o.k with full electrics but when I put another fuse in it blew again within a couple of miles.

    Can anyone help?

Have a check round all your connectors, might be damp gunge causing a short somewhere. Blast em all out with air from the compressor, i find that the best way to shift it.
Other than that its a case of disconnecting less important items and running the bike till you isolate the short/low resistance. Have heard cases os relay coils on some bikes going faulty.

Re: Blowing 30 Amp Main Fuse.

Check for a short to the frame on the solid red and red with white cables at the fuse mount.

If its on the red, its towards the ignition switch disconect and check between either end if thats good check the blue with pink and red with black between the ignition switch and fuse box (with all the other fuse in) it wont be past the fuse box!

if its on the red with white then check between the fuse and the regulator/rectifier. The green wires on the reg/rec go straight to earth(frame). If that is okay then check the three yellow cables that go to the alternator.

My bet is if not a chaffing cable then the reg/rec, honda have a habit of having dodgy reg/recs witch fail after about 7-8 years.

any probs pm me with your number and I will talk you through.

    Hope it helps!!
