    Fuel Gauge

Now I know the fuel gauge on the TA is crap to say the least but mine has now decided that it will show empty most of the time with every now and then flicking up to just abouve half way then going back to empty.

Any suggestions of what's wrong and how to make it better please. (IF this is a RTFM moment please tell me and I will go and buy one)

    Thanks guys

I suggest putting fuel in it when it is on empty.. and and wait for 1/2 a tank when it is on half before putting in fuel...

    ill get my hat..

But seriously it sounds like your floater is 1) sticking, or 2 buggered.. you will have to pull the tank off to find out which... so go with the the trip meter.. safer anyway..

    Re: Fuel Gauge

if you are going to take off the tank 1) check the fuses then put a multi meter across them if they have too much resistance that could be it too.. then do the same at the sender unit. if there is juice remove the unit.. and make sure that the top is ?95ohms? and bottom is cant remember it should be i the book, and is linear all the way inbetween.. you can do this while the unit is in the tank but you need to "fill" it up and drain it to test levels.. if it has gone bad 4 screws and a o ring... ..

The wiring connector is the blue one, on the left below the front of the seat - take the seat off and you should see it, if not take the left underseat side panel off.

Worth checking connection for rust etc but not being good at electrickery presume it would work fine or not at all??????

I can't speak for sure for the TA (haven't tried it) but on most bikes you can use a bent (into a hook) coathanger to move the float arm on the sender up and down to test the gauge/sender operation. Assuming the tank is near empty, move the arm upwards slowly and the gauge should rise accordinly. If the tank is full (not ideal) you'll need to re-shape the coathanger to push the arm downwards into the fuel, bu tit's better to take the bike for a 150 mile ride and then work with a near-empty tank

If, over part of the travel of the arm, the gauge goes a bit wild it's usually a sign that the sender is either on its way out or needs a good clean on the windings or, worse, is worn. Often when this is the case, and since the amount of work is the same, it's worth replacing the sender with a new one if it doesn't cost an exhorbitant amount. Far less trouble in the long run.

Great Idea never thought of it..(manly cus none of my bike have one.. just done them on cars). Just make sure the tip is not too sharp or you could scratch the inner coating off the tank (if it has one.. )...
