A long time ago I worked as a bike courier and most of the bikes I rode were ex-police R80RT BMs because they were cheap to buy (high mileage and with holes in strange places) but were tough and had been well maintained. I'd run them for a month or two (until they needed a service), fill the holes, respray them in civilian colours and sell them on. They generally came devoid of their livery, but one of the guys I worked with managed to get one before the stickers were taken off. He replaced the 'c' with a 't' ("POLITE") and people got out of his way pretty quickly (making quick progress through traffic when you're despatching is a huge advantage)......maybe something to do with the fact that he also wore a hi-vis jacket and a white helmet.....
This happy situation didn't last very long - he got stopped a number by people on similarly-decorated bikes or cars (!) and accused of impersonating a police officer. His argument was that he couldn't help it if people mis-read the stickers on his bike and there was no law against making yourself visible - it was a safety thing. He was in a grey area and was never charged, but he got fed up with the unwanted attention and sold the bike on to me. Those stickers don't come off in a hurry......
There's something to be said for not drawing attention to yourself![]()
A friend of mine was dispatching on a white deauville and first he noticed cars ware getting out of his way a bit but then he got fed up cuz cars started slowing down when they noticed him behind them, keeping him back. duble edged sward?
3 Africa Twins/280,000 miles. If it's happened to one of mine, it's gonna happen to one of yours.....eventually.
1 Varadero/17,000 miles ridden (of 40,000 miles on the bike), it's all still new to me!
Interesting engine bars on the Cop Tranny. Anyone know what kind these are?
