Re: So How Quick Is It?
I'd heard slightly over 6 for the old 600, with a standing quarter of just under 14 seconds (can't remember the source - might have been old MCN tests, so....). Presumably the 650 is slightly better, although it has higher gearing.
Am I right in thinking your sports bike-riding friend is primarily a car driver who rides his bike mostly for fun? The reason I ask is that 0-60 is traditionally used for comparing cars - for bikes the standing quarter mile time, plus terminal speed at the quarter mile mark are far more useful measures. While not exactly meaningless for bikes, the 0-60 measure is not the same as for cars because many sports bikes can do that in first gear. Not having to change gear makes a big difference. Most people who think in 0-60 terms are car drivers who can't think in bike terms.
I apologise now if your friend lives and breathes bikes, doesn't own a car (or even possess a car licence) and rides all year round. Since the rise of biking as a 'leisure and lifestyle' hobby (rather than a primary form of transport), the proportion of converted car drivers out there is far larger than it has ever been. While this has been good for the industry, IMHO it hasn't been good for biking as a whole. For instance, I suspect fewer sports bikes would be sold if the market wasn't tuned for the hobby rider who wants fun. Let's face it, the humble TA is one of the best owner-freindly allrounders out there. It even has a luggage rack as standard....
