Question So How Quick Is It?

Well there I was chatting to a 'sports bike nut' over a cup of tea after causing him some embarrassment when I left him & his R6 sucking in my exhaust fumes on my favorite twisties over Saddlworth Moor, when he asked me "What does it do 0-60 in"???
Well I'd managed to answer all his other questions without any problem, but this one had me stumped. I just didnt know. I'd never tried to time it myself for fear of throwing my Transalp down the road trying to operate the stopwatch whilst riding flat out.

    So...

What will my standard 2005 Transalp do 0-60mph in???

    Anyone know the stats please???.........................

I suggest this may be a case of 'horses for courses'. The TA is at its best on bumpy 'B' or minor roads - 175+mm or axle travel helps. On 'A' roads or even smooth 'B' roads a TA would not be able to even get close enough to smell the exhaust fumes of an R6.

It is best not to talk about best performances when discussing bikes with sports bike owners. Stick to manner of performance and you may get an edge

I think you may have got the wrong end of the stick, Quite obviously a TA won't blitz a R6 80% of the time, which is obviously why the R6 rider was so surprised. You don't buy a TA if all you want to do is blitz sports bikes, thats not the point I was making. I just wondered if any one knew what the 0-60 time is.
You're quite right about horses for courses though, that road I was on is perfect for the TA and I know it well enough to ride it flat out almost.
My chat with the R6 rider wasn't a "my bikes better than yours" merely a "mine does this, what does yours do".
Anyway, I'm still none the wiser!

im taking a guess here but id say 0 - 60 in around 6 seconds
sports bike usually do this in 2 or 3 so half the power = double the time

Nah my 12ADV does 0-60 in less than 3 secs, my ZX12 in 1.5secs and 0-120 in 3.

TA would be nearer 4 at a rough guess

Re: So How Quick Is It?

    Yamaha R6 3.55 sec
    GSXR 1000 2.92 sec
    GSXR 750 3.30 sec
    GSRX 600 3.48 sec
    Yamaha R1 2.71 sec

    (2006 figures from Motorcyclist Magazine)

Couple of year ago I ran my old TA down Santa Pod Raceway (as you do), can't find the print-out for it at the mo, but it shows times and speeds at various points along the quarter mile.
I'm sure I recall one of those points was near 60mph, 5.3 seconds rings a bell.
The quarter was done in 13.3 seconds, not too bad for a TA.

Re: So How Quick Is It?

I'd heard slightly over 6 for the old 600, with a standing quarter of just under 14 seconds (can't remember the source - might have been old MCN tests, so....). Presumably the 650 is slightly better, although it has higher gearing.

Am I right in thinking your sports bike-riding friend is primarily a car driver who rides his bike mostly for fun? The reason I ask is that 0-60 is traditionally used for comparing cars - for bikes the standing quarter mile time, plus terminal speed at the quarter mile mark are far more useful measures. While not exactly meaningless for bikes, the 0-60 measure is not the same as for cars because many sports bikes can do that in first gear. Not having to change gear makes a big difference. Most people who think in 0-60 terms are car drivers who can't think in bike terms.

I apologise now if your friend lives and breathes bikes, doesn't own a car (or even possess a car licence) and rides all year round. Since the rise of biking as a 'leisure and lifestyle' hobby (rather than a primary form of transport), the proportion of converted car drivers out there is far larger than it has ever been. While this has been good for the industry, IMHO it hasn't been good for biking as a whole. For instance, I suspect fewer sports bikes would be sold if the market wasn't tuned for the hobby rider who wants fun. Let's face it, the humble TA is one of the best owner-freindly allrounders out there. It even has a luggage rack as standard....

    Wow.

Re: So How Quick Is It?

According to a BIKE magazine test the 2004 650 Transalp does it in 6.7 seconds. In the same test the V-strom is 5.6, F650GS is 6.45 and XT660R is 6.26. Is suspect that with a bit of practice, all these figures could be improved upon.

That's not fair at all! Both the singles are marginally quicker! What where the terminal speeds - did they give them?
