    Transalp chain slider

    Afternoon,

Don't know if anyone has had this or can help. I had a rumbling noise, which turned out to be the front sprocket rubbing on the inside of it's cover. The teeth on the retaining plate had ground away. When I took the bike apart to replace this I found the chain had been pulling the chain slider outwards ( towards the frame ). I gave everything a good clean and put it back together, but the chain is still trying to pull in the same direction. I am wondering if someone has clobbered it and distorted the swingarm. - Any suggestions welcome.

First thought is that spacers on the rear wheel might be fitted incorrectly (or not at all....), or that the rear wheel isn't in straight (chain tension not adjusted equally each side). Either of these would mean that the front and rear sprockets weren't in line with each other, resulting in the chain pulling sideways.

Is the rear wheel straight? Might not have been properly alligned after you last adjusted the chain...

    Thanks everyone,

Have checked spacers and wheel alignment they are OK. Since I replaced my last chain, I have been using gear oil on the chain as I was told the chain would last longer because it flings the muck off. I wondering if something in the oil has attacked and distorted the nylon.

Motor oil is much better. Should think gear oil is a bit thick, but can't see how it would attack the rubber o-rings or the nylon. Have you checked that the guide is fitted properly, ... how often do you lube the chain ? Is the sprocket and hub aligned with the wheel ? Any pictures ?

Tizzy, does the chain slider need replacing as it is worn beyond it's service life?

    Re: Transalp chain slider

The chain slider has plenty of life in it yet. Have checked everything suggested and it's all OK. One thing I have noticed is the weld on the swing arm is a bit lumpy so the slider has a job to sit snuggly. I my have to carefully file this down.
