    A nice little idea

Here's something I've done with all my bike keys which I thought I'd share with you lot. If like me you have more than your ignition key on your key ring then this protects you yoke/ignition paint work from chips and scratches.

I've used small pieces of 'heat shrink' to cover the keys, attached to the key by some thin cord. When you need the key, you simply slide off the 'heat shrink' and then slide it back on after. (the cord stops you losing the heatshrink).
Be careful not to shrink the heatshrink too much or it won't slide off.
I use coloured 'heat shrink' so I can tell the pannier key from the top box one. The other key's for a lock.

(For those not familiar with 'heat shrink', it's used in electronics to insulate or hold together wires. It's basically a tube (like a straw) you place over wire and when you heat it up it shrinks to a tight fit. Its available at places like Maplins, a couple of £'s for a meter length).

Hope you might find that useful.

    Good idea

I found I've already worn a lot of the paint away from my top yoke with the "other" keys on the keyring.

Did the same with some clear plastic tubing. The type that you can get in (says it quietly) B&Q. It is soft enough to mold to the shape of the key after a short while - and fitted the round key for my disc lock a treat.

Must admit though, that the heat shrink idea is much, much neater.

Shouldn't this be in Bodgers Corner?

It's not a case of whether we can fix it or not - it's more a case of how fixed would you like it?

    Re: A nice little idea

Good idea, but this is what I do:

My main keyring with about 6 keys (house, top box, garage door etc) on it is attached to my TA ignition key with a loop of strong string that is about big enough to go around my hand.

When on the bike I put the ignition key in the slot and "drape" the rest of the keys down the front of the top fork yoke where their weight holds them from falling "backwards" onto the tank paintwork.

    Just another idea I guess!

My only concern with that is it whether it would be possible for it to become entangled in the cables down there and maybe interfere with the steering. If it can't then... it's another nice little idea!
