Hi there,
Can anyone recommend a good chain and sprocket set to fit a 1999 XL600VX Transalp?
Is it possible to fit these yourself?
Thank you,
Biggy

I fitted a genuine Honda chain and sprockets, from David Silver, myself without any problems. Took the opportunity to clean out the accumulated chain wax/oil gunk but it was all pretty straightforward.
I think the set was around £70, but I can't remember exactly. The chain, although in a Honda bag, was a DID x-ring so good quality and the Honda sprockets were more substantial then the ones they replaced.
You shouldn't have any difficulty doing it yourself; good luck.
David
As mentioned Honda C&S kits can be quite reasonable but can come with either RK chain or DID, I paid extra & bought Genuine sprockets and a DID chain from elsewhere as I reckon the DID is far superior to the original RK chain.

Thanks chaps. Is David Silver the place to get these chains and sprockets?
Do I need any special tools to link the chain?
Thanks,
Biggy
It's my understanding that David Silver is generally cheaper for Honda spares than 'official' dealers. I think they import themselves and pass on the savings. They are able to supply from the UK Honda supply chain as I was offered the same kit sourced from within the UK for about £15 more but with faster delivery.
As for tools; you will need special tools to fit a soft link, which is the recommended way of joining the chain. I fitted a heavy duty split link, the old chain had a split link without any problems but I could be taking a chance I guess. I had wanted to use a soft link but didn't have easy access to the tools.
Good luck
David

they are the cheapest but best of all they have a excellent web site and they stand by there products
i have bought loads of stuff from them and whenever i have had any issues they have always sorted it out quickly to my satisfaction
my mates and i have tool club where we all chip in for specials like splitters and riveter's and share it ! if a non member borrows it they give a little donation to our tool fund (allegedly)

Does anyone have a chain riveting tool and cutter they would be prepared to lend me around the Maidstone area?
Cheers,
Biggy
The chain that I fitted last year came with both a rivet link and a split link.
I fitted the chain with the split link and kept the rivet link safely stowed on the bike. Whilst I was visiting my parents in North Wales, last summer, I dropped in on Colwyn Bay Honda and got them to fit the rivet link - and all for the princely sum of £10.
Loads of people will tell you that you shouldn't run a chain with a split link, but as long as you don't do anything daft (like put it in back to front) and check it regularly as well as keep the chain tensioned correctly then you and the bike should come to no harm. And you can have a look at the new bikes in the dealership whilst they fit the rivet link for you.
Just my penneth worth.

It's not a case of whether we can fix it or not - it's more a case of how fixed would you like it?
