My TA is fast approaching its 20th year. While the bike works fine overall, it's starting to feel the age. I've made a brief list of all the things that would need to be fixed/overhauled in the next few months and it goes as this:
new front disc, pads and brakeline
new fork oil and springs
new rear shock and possibly swingarm bearings
new front tyre
I've done the math and it would cost roughly the same as I paid for the bike back at the time, maybe even a bit more (yes, it was a steal), and I would do most of the work by myself.
Oh, and the carbs will surely need a bit of attention in the future (new needle jets, pop-off valves etc).
As you can see it's nothing out of the ordinary for a bike of this age (the mileage is not that high) but it would amount to a fair sum of money.
As I said the bike works otherwise fine (though as most V-Hs and -Js uses a tiny bit of oil but I've been told to leave that alone) but lately I have felt the need for a slightly different commuter since my work is changing and I need to cover quite a few highway miles each week.
If I was sure that an overhauled Transalp would fit the bill I would gladly go out and order the parts needed right away.
So what do you fellows reckon? Should I try to sell the bike and use the money to get something fresher which would suit my needs better (for example a second-hand Deauville 650)? Should I keep it and set about fixing it? Or should reach deep into the change jar and buy soemthing new to keep in the long term?
Thanks!
