transalp gearbox

i got a transalp 600v 1998 about a month ago and i love it but the engine/gearbox makes quite a lot of winning noises ,as i speed up it seems to smooth out ! the bike has only done 16,000 mile . is this normal for that type of model as everything feels ok . john

I presume you mean whining noises, and no that's not normal it does sound like there might be wear or damage. When you say it smoothes out when it speeds up does that mean it gets quieter and does it depend on the gear you're in?

It will be worth checking the wheel bearings, or it could be just tyre whine if they are remotely 'off-roady'

it seems to be first gear that is noisy ! its not a bad noise just a whirling like a bearing .as soon as you change gear ,into 2 0r 3 rd its quiet.

Are you sure it's the engine/gearbox? My TA sometimes whines from the speedo cable, but it can sound like it's coming from somewhere else sometimes.

A worn gear will make a whining noise whilst in that gear. This is mine from an XR600. It's a known weak spot (3rd) on that bike, the hardening wears away. The noise was impossible to miss but didn't affect the running.

I've never heard of the problem with any TA gear so it's unlikely to be that. The noise in first will obviously coincide with low speed - when you can hear more than wind blast, so work through the simpler possibilities first. Including the chain.
