    engine oil

Im'e thinking of using a semi synthetic 10/40 oil in my 650 alp (not a specific bike oil) has anybody had clutch slip by using this type of oil?
would apreciate any opinions on this

    Re: engine oil

I've used fully synthetic oil (10/40), no clutch slip problems.

It might be worth looking at Best type of oil for my Africa twin 750? where there is a very similar debate going on....

I just had a service on the TA 700 and they used Castrol GPS and that is semi synthetic. No problems. fat-mal

    Re: engine oil

Been using motul 10w40 semi in all my bikes and cars for yonks (buy it in 25l drums, waaaay cheaper), never a problem. The only problem does arise is when a car-specific oil with friction-reducing additives is used in a bike, makes the clutch plates slip.

    Re: engine oil

Thanks for your input lads, brilliant debate on the other thread lord stig
I don't know if my new oil contains any friction reducers but its a good spec. and £10 for 5 litres so will give it a go I will post any problems
but not yet as I am not riding for a week or two.
About diesel oil I used a fleet diesel oil in my rotax 500 a few years ago
after reading that they were generally higher spec. made for coping with far more stress. I did not do a big mileage all I can say is the bike ran fine
and the clutch was definatly better.
Bottom line is that I think you lads who do the big mileage have proved it all, just wish I could still do that as well (too old and knackered BUT won't give up!)

    Re: engine oil

Good idea T ALP - let us know what you find, and what make it was. I had problems with clutch slip using car oils (petrol) previously, but was never 100% certain that was the cause. All I can say is my AT is fine after 86,000 miles plus on diesel oil, and the original clutch. Again, it's not exactly scientific, so it would be interesting to hear as many experiences as possible...

The military use the same grade of engine oil in all their road vehicles, it is as good in diesel engines as in petrol engines and motorcycles.

I've ran all my bikes for years with Mobil Delvac. TA runs fine and with absolutely no problems with clutch. It is working really well. I do change oils more frequently than I would do when using synthetic ones, but when the oils costs 2,5€/l I can afford that.
