Yes, you can do it. I think I got the filter off by putting a screwdriver through the filter so that I could turn it to get it free to spin off.

I have givi crashbars on my xl650 and the bash plate can be removed without removing the bars.
YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE

Don't even think of trying to change the oil and filter without first removing the bash plate. Undo three chrome-plated screws from the front and sides, one from underneath, and two small ones on the left hand side. The plate will slide out very easily.

I watched the service at my dealer and he didn't take my Givi crash bars off...

Exactly, don't touch the crash bars, but do remove the plastic bash plate.

My dealer didn't remove even the plate for oil & filter change, but I myself did when I changed them yesterday.

i didn't try,but my crash bar is too close to plate(they are tuching),so i don't think i will be able to remove plate with bars on.but i looked a bit and i can reach the nut and the filter with plate on.maybe oil will go in the plate, but i will wash it.seams easier than removing it all-maybe i am wrong?!

Standard Givi crash bar, standard bash plate... Are you sure the plate won't come out? The bar and plate do touch each other, but when you undo all the (6) screws, the plate will slide down -it sort of drops off.
