About to buy a Transalp 2001 model

    Hi,

I'm about to buy a Transalp 2001 model, is there anything I should now about the Transalp before I buy ?

Also what is the best luggage (cheapest) that will fit?

what are the cost of tyres and which are the best to get?

    many thanks

Re: About to buy a Transalp 2001 model

I used Avon Distanzias on my 2000 Transalp, they were ace for me.
Please double check that the steering head races aren't knakked, and generally look for leaky bits and bobs. + Brakes get seized with salt corrosion. Silencer does rot with time.
Other than that they are ever so solid!
    Cheers

I have had 2001 model for 3 years now and done nearly 50,000 miles on it since. They are generally very very reliable which is good but also means they can be abused, so look for signs that previous owners have given a reasonable amount of care and servicing. Other than that if it used all year check the brakes aren't binding due to sticky pistons and that head races and swing arm bearing aren't suffering with rust. These things should be easy and cheap enough to fix (I am about to do mine soon, so may change my mind about the easy bit later). A few other things - check the seat isn't leaking - the staples rust and let water in. The seat base is plastic so not too much harm but the foam will harden and rot eventually; make sure you get the spark plug spanner as its the only thing that will get the plugs out; good extras are scotoilers and heated grips and IMHO K&N air filter; don't be seduced by a touring screen - they make a noisyish bike VERY NOISY INDEED; Tyres - endless debate!!!! I was a fan of Tourance's - about £110 a pair but have just fitted Dunlop d607s which I think are better but are about a tenner more a pair. Luggage - you generally get what you pay for. Cheapest will always be cheap and might be nasty with it. Expensive - well, pay your money take your choice - I did with Metal Mules and am well pleased. There's a thread on the forum somewhere about Alpos alumiium panniers back for sale somewhere or other. These are about the cheapest Ali panniers you can buy and are quite highly rated by some who post on here.Good luck, you won't be disappointed with the bike.

2007 Varadero XLV1000. Now you're torquing but sadly gone to another forum member. One of the best bikes - period.
