    Question loses power.

    Hi Everyone, new to this,

I got hold of a 89 Transalp from a garden, 26000 miles, 3 years seating there, not covered over, few friends said i was mad, cleaned carbs, changed oil, fresh fuel, new bat, etc, pressed the button, roared into life, finshed bike, new rims, tyres,, took it for a blast, great, after 29 miles it lost power, had to keep throttle open a bit to get it home, engine stopped, started it again not much power, started it again, runs fine, then loses power again, for 29 miles it was fab, better than my old Bandit.
I am sure its nothing much, i was thinking of doing the carbs again, any ideas please. Mad Hale.

Check that you get spark in all spark plugs. If it runs on 1 cylinder is very obvious.

Sticky choke or corroded low tension connections on the front coil?? Is it fine when it cools down then iffy after it warms up and you slow down to slower speeds.
3 Africa Twins/280,000 miles. If it's happened to one of mine, it's gonna happen to one of yours.....eventually.

1 Varadero/17,000 miles ridden (of 40,000 miles on the bike), it's all still new to me!

Give us more symptoms to go on. Could be ignition.

Hi Ian did you notice when you lost power , Did the taco stop working. If it did one of your C.D.I. s has packed in " this is a very common fault" with the early Transalps. The bottom of the seat pushes down on the wires going into the C.D.I.s , Both of the C.D.I.S are the same so you just swap them around and if your Taco is working again that is the problem. On later models of the Transalp the C.D.I.s were turned onto their side .You need to take off both of the side panels to get the seat off and then remove the seat one bolt on each side near the back of the seat,The C.D.I.s are two black boxes with wires pointing up near the Petrol tank .New C.D.I.s are very expensive , Let us know if this helps.Francis

    Re: loses power.

Thanks to everyone for the info, sorry my reply is late, few months! Busy with work.
checked choke, new plugs, checked fuel, took bike out, fine, got home, left bike ticking over, 10 mins, it died, could not start for about 20 mins, bit rough, left 1 hour, started fine, went ok,
so it sounds like the answer is corroded low tension connections, do they pull out, my Haines manual does not say.

    many thanks

    Re: loses power.

Symptoms sound JUST like prob i had with Trident - that was down to duff Fuel Tap Diaphragm (aint a clue what yr Alp has in the Fuel Tap Dept ?) but maybe worth me puttin me oar in !!
The Tap prob was combined with a Coil that broke down as soon as it got warm (like you after approx 15 miles)

These 2 Faults STUMPED the TRIUMPH DEALER i bought the bike from, AND ANOTHER OFFICIAL DEALER who i took it too after the 1st obviously couldnt fix it (& who "deduced" the HT leads were at fault fitting/ charging me for un-needed parts !!).

Sorted it meself in the end

And that was the last time i let a "proper" dealer work on any of my bikes !!

    Good Luck !

Actually The Tap prob was combined with a Coil that broke down as soon as it got warm (like you after approx 15 miles) BUT it was the diaphragm fault made the bike "Die" after a burst of throttle for circa 5 miles. Ridden on slower B Roads On/ Off the throttle it wouldnt happen atall !!.
