    New Transalp owner needing help

    Hello,

Just brought a 2001 Transalp XL650 and loving it , its a great ride and handles like a dream. I us to have a honda shadow so its totally different to what I'm use to and loving every minute. I am missing my old bike as well with its Harley sounding exhausts, the transalp is so quiet.

Anyway I will get to the point. As I do not have a manual with the bike, and have not order a haynes manual as yet I just have a few questions.

How big is the fuel tank ?
and is there a reserve or warning light that lights up to let u know when you are about to run out?

How many miles do you get out of a tank. Just got 150 before I lost my nerve and filled up as I didn't want to risk running out on the A1!.

thanks for your help in advance.

    Ride safe

    cheers

The tank on the 01 transalp is 19 litres

there is no reserve or fuel light, we transalp riders use the force

I get about 145 - 150 before I fill up, wouldnt push it any more than that although I know there are a couple of lads here who have got more.

I've got a haynes manual for the 600/650 if you want one.

Re: New Transalp owner needing help

As Sharri says, but that's to the bottom of the filler neck, the most I've squeezed in from empty is 19.6 litres.

I know on my bike that when the needle on the fuel gauge drops to the 1/4 mark, I have just over a gallon left, so knowing I get well over 50mpg, I'll disregard the gauge from then on. It'll drop into the red and out the other side very quickly. Even doing this can test your nerves.

So to answer your question, there's no reserve, the red zone is the reserve, which I think is suppose to be 3 litres.

Re: New Transalp owner needing help

I bottle out when the need averages around the bottom of the red on the gauge. However on filling up I usually get about 16 litre in, meaning another 3 litres still left in the tank, about 30+ miles more to empty. I never dare to go any lower just in case.....

edit: Oh, and due to the majority of my riding being in very heavy traffic I'm currently averaging 43 mpg.

Re: New Transalp owner needing help

Hi, Thanks for all the replys looks like this forum is as good if not better than the shadow one!

I like the sounds of 44-45mpg range of fuel. Yes my nerves got the better of me and I was no where near the red. Maybe once I get use to the millage I will become braver. This is my first fill up.

Nareef, I would love a copy of the haynes manual , how much do you want for it ? Is it the book version (ie not on CD in a million languages, had one of those for the shadow). whats your email address

A couple more questions to test your knowledge and experience. Even though I feel no wind around my legs and hands which is a dream compared to the shadow. I do feel my head getting blow off at top. Is there a different screen or attachment which will reduce the wind up top? I have heard the touring one is noisy.

Also just got myself a honda MY5 Givi Top box, would a givi universal plate be ok to attach it to the rack you get on the transalp ? This is probably asking the obvious, sorry about that.

    ride safe

    cheers

Good choice of bike Dunks, hope you enjoy it.

Coming back from Belgium a couple of weeks back, solo but with panniers and top box packed, i topped 200 miles on a tank and then put £17.85 in.Cannot remember how many litres. That was coming up from the Eurotunnel, motorways and sticking at about 60-70 mph.Over the trip, 1060 miles, the average was 53.65 mpg.

    Regards T.

Re: New Transalp owner needing help

I get 200 to a tank - about 50mpg. Even then it ususlly takes about 16/17 litres to fill.
Mine is an 01, the needle goes well below the red before it's empty. The most I've got is over 220 miles (looking for petrol on a Sunday night in France) and it still never ran out. My commute is a mix of twisty A/B roads and dual carriageway upto about 80.
If you cane it on the Mway at 100 you'll need to fill up at about 140 miles.
