Air filter for xl600v transalp, 95 n

Hi there,
ive just recently passed my test and am a proud owner of a transalp! ive been scanning the forum for maintenance tips and need advice on air filters.
i have bought a new air filter for my 600 transalp through wemoto (about £16)-it has European filter company -on the box, this is a real basic question but do i need to treat the air filter, any pitfalls to watch out for? as the haynes manual i have is vague and just shows where to find it on the bike and gives no installation instructions!. all advice appreciated, many thanks

I recently fitted a new air cleaner to my 600 Transalp and listened and followed some good advice from this forum I purchased a genuine air and oil filter from David Silver Honda parts and the machine runs a lot better I also noticed on some cheeper filters including some from wemoto and e-bay that they did not have the foam seals on the inner surface which in my mind cannot be right.
As I say I have noticed that my bike runs better with original for a few pounds more you are getting the best BUT each to their own.

Nah, you just get the old one off and replace it with the one you bought. It is a paperfilter, and no need to treat it, it will be soaked in petrol in a short while. Unscrew the three screws and replace, easy as that ... and you will feel the bike runs better everytime you change the airfilter. i usually change the filter every spring. And, yeah, it is a 95 model, right ? Uncrew the side cover (below the saddle leftside), get grip near the top of each side and gently pull it out from the rubber holders, i pull in front first then tilt it abit down and oull the aft part. Behind this plastic is the filter, 3 screws (use crc or wd40 if stuck) take out and replace straight, no problem at all..

Thanks for the advice guys.... yep it was a K&N babybadger, already had bought the paper filter so have replaced with this and will clean up the K&N sometime in the future (probably when i get fed up with paying out for new ones), many thanks

If you are driving on lots of fast 'A' roads, I would keep the K&N in it, if going off road the paper filter will obviously stop more dirt.......

So what is the best replacement filter to get then?
Since if i get to keep my bike my current filter is rather grubby so may change it but is it worth going for the K&N since the K&N on my car works well and i already have th K&N cleaning/oiling kit?

K&N is easy to clean and gives more punch in the mid to upper mid rev range from memory. I would always put a standard filter in if going on dusty trails or offroading where you need more filtration though, but on road can't beat them........that is purely my experience of using K&N on a bike. I have a K&N on my Buell via the Forcewinder, but I can say what stock filter is like there, but the pick up in the midrange is mindblowing.....
