    Re: Screen Deflectors

I have also been looking for a deflector to fit to the existing screen and have found two possibles (seller on EBay):-

The Laminar Lip (£65 + postage)

And the Aero-Trim (£45 for TA size)

Does anybody have any experience of either? The Laminar Lip looks like it should do the business but looks a bit odd.

    Re: Screen Deflectors

I have tried 3 screen sizes on each of my TA and Vara - standard, large touring, and a cut down standard. For both bikes the cut down is the best for getting rid of wind noise and turbulence, although on the Vara with cut down screen and when 2-up I suffer from that horrible nodding dog thing in cross winds - which I think is caused by differences in pressure on either side of your helmet.

I would be interested to find out the effect of a deflector on various sizes of screen as the downside of a cut down screen is a bit more wind pressure on your neck, although no worse than a naked bike.

Must admit Austin, I too have experimented with screen variations, touring flip was best for lack of wind resistance but noisiest, stock best (screen) for noise.
Best of all for noise is the unfaired Alp, but obviously wind strain is a problem on longer motorway runs.

I did try gaffer taping a deflector spaced from the sceen in different positions but found it no quieter.

The only way I find to pretty much eliminate wind noise is to 'shrug' my shoulders to remove airflow from passing underneath my helmet......

    Re: Screen Deflectors

Its not just screen size either Phil, my Vara with a very cut down screen (effectively no screen really) is noisier than my TA with standard screen, so there must be something else going on - airflow over and around the rest of the fairing is my guess, although I do find the noise is louder in my left ear - especially on the Vara - so had also thought it could be wing mirrors - the left mirror being mounted slightly further back (or is it forward) than the right hand one. I have the Shoei whisper kit on my helmet which makes a big difference to the noise coming from under the helmet.

In my limited experience big screens, and probably flip kits, move wind roar to the top of my helmet - which seems a lot louder and instrusive and causes eyesight affecting vibration at higher speeds. The whisper kit does nothing for the noise or the vibration.

    Re: Screen Deflectors

    Hi there

I sliced my screen up and put the spare bit on top so it swivels.

Works better than I could have hopped for. There are some pics of the first fix on the bodge it forum. I can adjust as I feel like it. Its as quiet as with no screen on and you could vary the draught over a long journey.

Just for a laugh you can tilt it up, put feet on passenger rests, tuck in low and the draught blows the rain down the visor, keeping it clear.

    Re: Screen Deflectors

    Viking,

How did you get on with the Aero-Trim?

I am a short a**e so the blast hits just above the visor and is not too much of a problem. Where I really suffer is with the limited width of the screen. The side draft hits my shoulders and creates incredible buffeting/noise. Probably explains why the helmet is more of a factor in keeping things quiet.

Unless of course you sit behind a barn door of a screen. Had a test on a 1200GS (far too expensive) but noise-wise it was perfect whilst the 1150GS (narrower screen) was almost as noisy as the TA.

*Trying to see if the Laminar-Lip approach worked, I got some scrap perspex, cut it to approx the same size, heated it and moulded it round the original with a bit of a lip to top & sides. It was a lot better but still get noise from shoulder buffeting. Apart from the Heath Robinson looks, it fouls the bars on full lock (MOT failure?).

I have started saving for the 1200GS (should have enough by my 70th B'day )

I tell you what, without having to spend hundreds of my hard earned pennies on different types of screen I wish there was someone out there who would let one try-before-they-buy!!! I use my TA for work, 90miles a day round trip and while I agree I prob need a higher screen Im not parting company with cash until I tried one and found it works!!

    Re: Screen Deflectors

    Me too.

Been dithering for ages about which one to buy and all are a fair bit of cash - especially if they don't work. Some folks on here have tried 2-3 so probably have a garage full between us. We should start a "swap shop" for screens.

I have just ordered the Laminar Lip to start us off. He has offered sale or return if I cling-film it up and gaffer tape it on. Take a look at the pic above and I am convinced it will hit the bars on full lock so will have to be off for MOT.
