    Some questions...

Hi guys. Have ridden my 2000 X-plate transalp for a week now, covered some 300mles and used 2 tanks fuel. Its not missed a beat, ridden in both nice warm sun and torrential summer rain. Ace!! Its comfy and nice upright riding so I can see overcar users heads! Well pleased.

A question though, about the temperature gauge. It runs halfway between the cold and the half-way point. Fan cuts on OK just above the half way point. Is this right or is it running too cold?

Also the fuel gauge, does 100 miles without the gauge moving then rapidly rescends from 100miles to the empty. Apart from that its a fantastic commuter tool which is extactly what Im using it for.

Welcome to the wacky world of the Transalp fuel guage!
Don't worry mate - they're all like that & you'll get used to it.
Your temp guage also sounds about normal (same as mine at least).
Glad you're enjoying your new bike.

Thankyou, put my mind at rest. What a fab bike, not ridden it today and getting withdrawal symptoms already!

    Enjoy.

It's not a case of whether we can fix it or not - it's more a case of how fixed would you like it?

    Re: Some questions...

Every bike (and car) I've ever owned with a fuel gauge does that. Imagine a float on the end of a wire arm. It sits on top of the fuel so when the level is a little lower than right up to the brim it registers full because its at maximum elevation. However, if the fuel level is right up to the roof it's not going to float any higher because the top of the tank won't let it. So it shows full right up till the moment the fuel gets low enough to let it start moving. So when you see it start moving more quickly that's the normal speed you're going through your fuel.

I went over a road hump at full speed once on my GPz750 (it was camouflaged and I wasn't looking where I was going), I ended up sitting on the tank, my girlfriend ended up in my seat. We both wiggled back to our proper seating positions and stopped so she could discuss my riding with me. From that day forth my fuel gauge never registered full, even when the tank was brimmed. I think the fuel level float hit the roof of the tank (at the same time my testicles hit the outside) and bent the arm it hinges on downwards a little.

1 Varadero/17,000 miles ridden (of 40,000 miles on the bike), it's all still new to me!

Same here on an 03. Remember reading about both of these quirks before I bought one, so it didn't exactly surprise me.

Many years back I had a GPz550 with a digital LCD fuel guage. Four bars (full) lasted ages, then 3 - 2 (find a fuel station) - 1 (PANIC!). Got used to it after a while. Strangely can't seem to remember how I coped with pre-fuel gauge bikes!

03 TA Blue, Givi bars, centre stand, Givi Pannier racks, heated grips, MRA Vario - smooth!

    Also 4x4 with a towbar - and a trailer!

You had a reserve position on your tap and probably knew that as soon as you went to reserve you needed fuel, like NOW! I had an RD Yam that would do 50 miles on reserve, I also had a Suzi trailie that would do about 7 miles, for the latter, I always carried a litre of fuel when trail riding!
