Question checking TA oil level - a quick question

A quick question, (well 2 actually)

When checking the oil level on my (recently acquired) TA

    I presume it should be:

    a) when the oil is cold (or warm and left for a bit to settle) and

    b) should the oil level be measured with the dip stick screwed in or not?

Hope I'm not asking a question thast been asked a lot before - a forum search didn't throw anything obvious up

    cheers
    Nick

The Dipstick must be resting on the lip, NOT screwed in.
YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE

The correct procedure for check the oil level is -

    1) Start the engine and let it idle for between 3 - 5 minutes.

    2) Stop the engine and hold the bike upright, on firm level ground.

    3) After 2 - 3 minutes, remove dipstick, wipe clean and re-insert it WITHOUT screwing it in.

    4) Remove the dipstick, the level should be between the two marks.

It's not a case of whether we can fix it or not - it's more a case of how fixed would you like it?

Lutin, I am really sorry but I have to disagree with you on that one.

    The correct procedure is

    1. put kettle on
    2. nudge significant other and tell them you think you've run out of oil
    3. watch as there's a big sigh and out he goes to check it
    4. make a cup of tea and change channels to something more agreeable

    Works for me every time

So discovering after 200 miles at 90mph on Christmas Day that adding an entire litre of oil gets the level to about half-way is OK then?

To be fair, I wasn't well and didn't want to visit my sister so motorcycle maintenance wasn't high on my list. God love the Alp, it just runs on and on.

Not if you run it low on oil it won't... if you don't do any other maintenance, at least keep the oil topped up and preferably the chain correctly tensioned and oiled...
BTW I tried a similar something similar to your method Sharibee, but it didn't produce the same end result

Re: checking TA oil level - a quick question

Thanks for the variety of suggested procedures - both Honda apporaved and *almost* Honda approved

Can anyone tell me what amount of oil takes the level from min on the dipstick to max - on a TA 600 '92.

would take some of the guess work out of topping up the oil...

    cheers
    Nick
