650 Windshield Cutdown or holes drilled?

Greetings all, my first post here, long time lurker though.

I've tried the search program and can't find anything on this subject.

I'm in the states and have a 01 650 with a Honda windscreen that is 19" tall measured straight up the middle. The wind roar from it is really loud and I'm trying to find out if anyone has cut theirs down or drilled holes in the bottom section near the center where it attaches to the bodywork?

As I don't have any access to other TA's of this year over here it's hard to even compare whether I have a stock screen or not. I've made my own type of Laminar lip which is about 2" higher than the screen, but that did not seem to help too much.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

    Thanks

    Hi Gerry and welcome

You must be about the only 650 Alp owner in North America - how did that one come about?

    As for your screen......
I along with quite a few others here have experimented with screens, I have returned to stock as it is a decent compromise between wind protection and noise. Others have cut slots, drilled holes etc

Height of the stock screen is 13 1/2 inches from the bottom, where itis visible from the fairing, to the top.

    Hope this helps

Phil, thanks for the height info, that's a start at least for me to ponder. The story of how I got the bike is a bit long, but I'm glad to have it.

    Welcome to the forum, Gerry.
I have fitted a MRA Vario to my bike and find it is not to different in hight to the original screen but has an adjustable section.

Frad, yes born in Liverpool, came to the states when I was 22, which was many years and bikes ago!

Stumpy, thanks for the Vario advice, but I think I'm gonna cut the screen down to stock size and take it from there.

    Welcome!!

Best way to cut wind noise and in my experience always works, is to use some ear plugs!! Seriously

I too have tried several screens on a 650, and they were all noisy, the quietest was the MRA at lower speeds, above 60, they are all the same!

Re: 650 Windshield Cutdown or holes drilled?

Steve, I usually wear ear plugs, but I noticed last week when I was riding my Yammy XT225 which has no screen that the noise was nowhere near as loud as the TA. Same section of road same speeds, same helmet. Thats why I may experiment with making the screen as short as possible. The problem is when I cut it and if I get it wrong, its gonna be hard to replace the screen here in the states.

Re: 650 Windshield Cutdown or holes drilled?

You might find this approach helpful perhaps:

Home made screen, It only bloody works !!!!

I saw that bike when I was in Scotland last summer and it looked tidy how he'd done it, is adjustable, and he said it worked a treat. I think the fittings were bits from kitchen cupboards or something like that (if you do a search I think he mentioned it somewhere). By the looks of things he's used two screens there but if you've got a tall screen perhaps you could get away with cutting it and using two parts of the same screen (not sure as I haven't tried it myself but have been tempted a few times cutting down my touring screen like that on my Africa Twin as I have the same noise and turbulence problem with it you mention).

I think it has something to do with bleeding air.
Splitting the air flow reduces the turbulence.
