    Broken Transalp Speedo

    Hi All,

During the cold spell my speedo has died: no trip, no odo and no speed. I' stripped, checked greased and tested the cable and the fault is definitely at the 'clock' end as even on a cordless drill I can't get a flicker. Those nice people at Honda confirmed my suspicions but the nice lady in parts wanted to exchange new parts for £400+ of my hard earned (and that was for me to fit!!). So, I'm either after a second hand working speedo from a 650, a digital alternative if anyone knows of one or a suitable alternative donor bike.

    All suggestions gratefully received....

Try these, been wanting to fit one of these to a bike for ages,

Lot less than a new Honda one.

very unusual, have you had the dash off and made sure the speedo end is ok on the cable? They can break anywhere along their length.
The drill was spinning the right way? silly i know but did you try both directions?
the cable was not pulled out too far and not engaging with the speedo end?
mine looked fine till i pulled it and the drive/wheel end came away and fell off leaving the cable inside.
the drive on the wheel definitely turns when you turn the wheel?
might be cheaper to take out speedo and have it repaired,i had this done a few times for cars when I lived in sarf london, i also had them modified when changing gearing etc. It was relatively cheap.

Have a look at this thread, a very tidy conversion.

    Removing fairing and dials.

Cheers chaps, I appreciate the help

So far my favourite solution is this: http://www.acewell.co.uk/catalog/pro...oducts_id=1784 Thanks to Wheeliebin for pointing out the thread.

I'm still open to suggestions and if I do go down the modified route ,I'll be sure to post the results.

Seems that David Silver spares have the Transalp speedo listed at £180 - part number 37200MCB941.

Some dis / assembly required to fit it though.

It's not a case of whether we can fix it or not - it's more a case of how fixed would you like it?

    Re: Broken Transalp Speedo

If it turns out to be the speedo itself I would go down the modifying route, Cheaper and better looking.
YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE

Plus one on btbloke's post. Have had loads of broken speedo drive cables over the years so until you have removed the inner cable to check it is intact, assume this is the problem.

An easy option is to use a GPS! Honestly, they work fine and will allow the bike to pass an MOT. No odometer for servicing mind

I used to use a Garmin GPS12 on a quad as a speedo for very low speed work on the land. Mil spec, waterproof and vibration proof and cost about a tenner on eBay when I last looked. You do need a 12v lead though....
