Chain replacement and Lost a tooth

Started my basic bike maintenance course last week and this week we used my TA to do a chain change. So saving I guess approx £60 on dealer charges at its iminent 8000 mile service.

So off came the overly long OEM RK chain that had the back wheel wound all the way back (7800 miles) and on went a new Premium Gold DID heavy duty chain. I expected to be doing the work but the tutor did most of it. This included cracking the bolts off the rear chain ring to change it - they were extremly tight and he was very concerned about snapping them, but some cursing later they were off.

Overall quiet easy, but this was on full ramp, in a warm, fully equipped workshop, how easy it would be on the garage floor at 4 degrees C and with poor lighting I wouldn't like tio consider.

In changing the sprockets I dropped the back to a 47 from 48, only a 2% drop in revs, but it is noticeable - now just under 5000 rpm at 70 ish and a little better in town by staying in first and second longer.

I have yet to see any mpg changes.

We've another 8 weeks to do and the last 3 are intended to working on your own bike - so there's the extra lights, the re-jetting.......................................

I take it that you are enjoying the course then?

Good stuff, glad to hear someone getting stuck in and getting their hands dirty. Great sense of achievement, even if you didn't do all the work.

It's not a case of whether we can fix it or not - it's more a case of how fixed would you like it?

Last year dropped the rear sprocket to 47 and raised the front by one tooth above standard if memory serves me to 16. Posted some comments regarding revs/mph and consumption if you can find the thread. On one moderate bimble around Kielder managed just over 60 mpg.

7800 miles !! is that all a RK chain lasts, surely not.

Good luck with the course, when you've finished, my bike's ready for a service
