    XL700 accessory socket

    Hi, folks.

Going to fit an accessory socket under the seat - pondering about where to take the power from.

I could connect straight to the battery (in-line fuse in the lead to the socket), but a switched supply seems like a good idea - maybe picking the power from the back light circuit?

Only really looking to power a satnav, maybe an inspection lamp - nothing with a huge demand.

    Any thoughts?

    Cheers,

    Hi Tony

I would have thought that providing you don't use anything that pulls too much juice the rear lighting circuit should be fine, you don't want to draw to much current from the rear bulbs. Switched supply i think is essential that way you won't forget and end up having to bump start it. But I'm not an auto electrician so I should wait until someone on here with more savy than me gives some proper advice

That was my line of thought, too. I can't see a problem going that way - but, then again, sometimes you get an idea in your head and miss obvious alternatives - so I thought I'd ask.

That looks pretty neat - handy, too.

This is what I've got - cheap and cheerful, and will fit under the seat (which, hopefully, means there won't be room for things to fall out of it):

    eBay Link - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/12V-Motorcycle-accessory-power-socket-100cm-Phone-GPS_W0QQitemZ300286456930QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Mot orcycle_Parts?hash=item300286456930&_trksid=p4634. c0.m14#ebayphotohosting

There should be room, if I shift the toolkit to under the rack.

    Cheers,

    Just remembered......
Have a look here, http://marinestore.co.uk/page/mrst/P...ctors/PL27471/ BTbloke sent me this link when i inquired about fitting one recently. Means you will have to drill onto the plastic but the beauty is its water proof haven't got mine yet but I think this is the way I'm going to go. My aging TA has a bolt on seat not hinged so PITA to keep getting under it

    Re: XL700 accessory socket

The motorcyclepowersockets one is good option, it gives you all you need, comes with an in-line fuse, and on bikes like the XL700 it means that you can use this power socket with the ignition off, which is probably better because when the ignition is on then the headlight is on so although you might only be pulling a small power load through the socket, the fact that you cant switch off the headlight means that the battery is getting drained fairly quickly, so unless you have the engine running to keep a charge going then this seems like the best option. Maplins do a waterproof socket with a cover plug and the rest of the kit etc but would cost about the same as that one already made up.

    Re: XL700 accessory socket

When I fitted an aux socket to my Vara, I wired it straight to the battery (via an inline fuse) for two reasons; Firstly, as pointed out, if through the ignition the headlamp is on too causing big power drain. Secondly, I can plug my Optimate in via the Aux socket rather than having a dangly lead. Works a treat! Got my bits off Ebay - Towzatronics I think; Really helpful guy too and dirt cheap prices.

    Re: XL700 accessory socket

Knew I'd get good advice if I asked!

I hadn't considered the downside of the headlamp having to be on whilst using the socket - fine for the satnav when on the go, but much less good for anything you want to use when stopped.

Reckon I'll follow the Jimmcc / sparklymarkly approach and wire direct to the battery, via a fuse.

Incidentally, my bits came from Towzatronics too - well built and fast delivery.

    Thanks, all.
