    power for sat nav ect

    Hi

I am fitting a sat nav, where do you take the power from?
I am quite happy to take direct off the battery and feed a cable to front, just wondered if there were any other solutions to choose from.

If you're using a "cigarette lighter" charger cable, connect a female plug (with or without a switch) close to the battery, run the sat nav cable under the seat and tank to where you want to place the sat nav. That's how i did it.

Thatīs how I did it too - and once I forgot to disconnect it and didnīt use the bike for 6 weeks. Completely killed the battery

It would maybe be better to take a switched live feed so that itīs switched off when the ignition is off. For my intercom I use a feed from the rear light.

Oh yes, i forgot to say that i have a key switch in my bike that totally disconects the negative cable. It's got the "save the battery" and "prevent it from getting nicked" functions.
But it's true that if you run it directly to the battery, it wil run it down.

When i wired mine in on the Varadero i took power from the back of the dashboard for the digital odometer, that way when the bike is turned off so is the relay for powering the satnav hence no flat battery as the odometer goes off when you take the key out the ignition

I took my feed from the instrument panel light, It powers my relay for the heated grips as well.
The lights come on with the ignition.
YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE

    Hi Rick,

I bought one of these for Ģ7.50... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Motorcycle-Wat...1%7C240%3A1318 . Run the power cable across the frame and up the inside of the left hand fairing panel. Then drilled the panel (whilst holding breath) and fitted the waterproof socket. Thought it may come in handy for camping as well as running the tw@ nav, so far no compaints

Re: power for sat nav ect

Found 2 places to take power from, underneath left side pannel and one of the connectors on the left side of the instrument cluster. Both come with the ignition.

The sat nav has a power supply in the cigarette adaptor as well as a fuse.

I think I shall mount the power supply part of the sat nav in the tail so I can get to it if the enclose fuse goes. Run wires to the side pannel for power and run the 5v output of the power supply up to the sat nav at the front.

I am thinking about running the wires inside some 10mm plastic heating pipe to protect them. Runs alongside the existing loom, under the tank to the front.

    Hi Rick
I took my power from the feed to the front brake switch, just tapped into it , its ok for small power (sat nav), you could use it to activate a relay to switch a direct battery feed ( fuse it with a 15amp fuse )... The brake light feed is switched and fused.. no tank or seat off

    Hi Rik,

I took my feed off the heated grips since I thought that I wouldn't be using both at the same time ----- Doh

I attached the socket to the side of the idiot lights -- remember it fell off going down to the National ? Had to secure it with gaffa tape Got it fixed now though

I've got some 10mm piping, I'll drop it off next time I'm in Skye.
