Has anyone ever tried to make their own fairing? I'm thinking about trying exactly that with fibre glass as produced versions are massively expensive.

We made our own kayaks when I was a scout. I think I was an unintentional solvent abuser. It would explain a lot.
Seriously, we had someone to show us how to do it, we had decent molds and loads of time and it was very hard work. Not easy and not pretty either and I'm not sure we saved that much money, it was around the time that cheap plastic kayaks started to become available. By all means have a go but it is an art. Have you done any already?
No never had a go at all. Have been looking on ebay for some old panels to use as a template and start point for a mold, that way I could make sure that screw holes married up and the instrument panel fits. If I could make a mould, plastic vacum moulding may be an option.... I may try with a fender first to see if its possible.

Practice. From memory (it was a long time ago) small and flat is easier than big and curvy. Go easy on the amount of resin you use for each layer and I seem to remember that it's important to get the hardener/resin ratio right. I remember getting loads of books out of the library on the subject so I suppose nowadays there's plenty of internet info now?

Jen experimented with GRP with a XTZ fairing, came out really light and with good impact damage...She also did a new rear end with built in 'heck' tanks
