    Smile First Service

Had first service today bit late 900 miles cost £90 (Dealer subsidises first service) I find it odd that my car cost around the same but at 17500 miles with no dealer subsidy,do you not get the feeling that we as bikers are being conned, as times have moved on but service intervals on bikes have not, with modern engine production and the advance in lubricants you would think that service intervals could be at least doubled i.e. first service 1000 miles then every 7-8000.My Pan used to go in once a year for a service irrelevent of the mileage be it 4000 or 7000 and the oil that came out was still clean, the valves were done at 16000,so they said (and charged) but other than that nothing. The TA is hardly a high performance engine,I am hoping to tour through France and Spain this year, perhaps Honda should do a mobile service so as they don't miss out on any money that they can get from us.
The garage was very good they loaned me a 1250 Bandit, felt like a barge after the TA. lovely engine similar to my CB1300 but not quite as good 6 gears why ! It only needs 4 or maybe 5 like the CB. I still Love my TA and was glad to give the Bandit back

I think the services for bikes is still in the region of aircooled engines, but I would not exceed the milage set unless unforeseen circumstances arose.
YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE

    Re: First Service

Getting the valves right is important at the first service, a Honda specialist said that if they're done correctly they may never need doing again. They were set in the factory before the engine had even turned a stroke after all.

It's not *really* a 4000 miles service interval anyway, the 4000 mile service is a good inspection of the bike and plugs and clean the oil breather tube and airbox drain. Hardly a service, the 8000 is where you need to spend actual money on oil/filter and not much different otherwise so it's a low maintenance machine. I can see how it be annoying if you were paying a dealer to do the 4000. The 8000 would work out once a year roughly for many owners.

90 quid sounds a rip off - as far as I'm aware, as long as you take the bike to the supplying dealer, the labour is FOC & you only pay for consumables like oil/filter, chain lube etc.

Oil services thereon are every 8k, no where near a modern car but they don't have combined engine & gearbox oil either.

    I'd check that invoice though!

£90 does seem a bit high. I got my 07 ta it's first service at 980 miles lastsummer and it only cost £48 .

Yes that was last summer, things have changed as now the labour on first service is not free thats from 1st Jan 2009,they did do the valves as well, mind you the first service on my car was not free as stated in my original post, cost about the same but the mileage was 17500

I am not complaining just stating a fact,as the bike is great fun and an absolute blast on country roads, riding sensibly of course ( Well reasonably)

    Hi Claw
I've had a lend of that Bandit know what you mean. And I part-exed my CB 1300 into Thunderroad this time last year. Super bike but my knees are shot and I had trouble holding it up. Still done Spain and back on pain killers and freeze spray...take care fat-mal

    Re: First Service

    Folks,

I've just had my 8000miles service on my TA700.. I hope you are all sitting down for this..
I took it to Ecosse Honda in Aberdeen.
It was booked-in for last Thursday, so I took it in on the Wednesday afternoon.
They gave me a new CBF1000 (which was ok, but was glad to hand it back!!)

I just got it back today (Tuesday). That took them 3.5 days!!

The garage said that mine was the first ever TA700 they have had to do an 8K service on!! I rode it round Europe last summer - hence the milage
They charged me £404 total. I almost fainted!!
    It was 6 hours labour!!

Anybody know if this is reasonable - or have I been ripped-off???

BTW: everything was totally fine and the bike is like new.. Seems to be a little quieter and smoother now..

    Jon

    Re: First Service

Picked up my new 700 TA on Sunday. Was quoted £129 for the 'dealer subsidised' first service, inc fluids and valve check. The 'free' 1st service finished in Jan. Might phone around for some other quotes - perhaps some dealers 'subsidise' more than others! Methinks I'll skip the 4000 mile 'service' and change the oil myself.
