    Exhast clamp....what size???

    Folks
I removed the end can off my 03 Transalp XL650V to paint it. The clamp which joins it to the main pipe is rusted and broken. I went to my local Honda dealer who said he wanted £23 for a new one!!!!!!! I don't know if he made a mistake or whether he thinks that's the right price but for a clamp I think it's outrageous. I have seen universal replacement clamps on the net for 6 and 7 quid so I reckon that's the way to go here. Can anyone tell me for sure what size I need???

    Many thanks
    Chris

    Hi Chris,

This post might help you -

    exhaust clamps

Can you not take the size you require from your old one??

It's not a case of whether we can fix it or not - it's more a case of how fixed would you like it?

Sadly the old one fell apart on removal. It was very badly rusted and it's impossible to tell what size it is.

Ah, what you need is then a thin strip of paper. Wrap it around where the clamp used to fit, mark the paper where it crosses itself, take it off, lay it flat and measure between the two marks. Viola, you have the circumference of the exhaust!

Divide the result by pi (3.142....) and you have the diameter.

    Easy, no??

Lutin, you are a feckin genius!!!!! Why didn't I think of that???? lol

I had a look at that site your link referred to and they do look quite good....and cheap. I much prefer to get the fully stainless steel version. My old clamp had 2 bolts and the ones shown only appear to have one. Can I assume this won't cause any problem???

    Many thanks for your help.

I doubt having one bolt would cause any trouble. I would put some copper grease on the thread though, just in case you want to take it off again at any time.

Yes, good point Lutin, I was thinking I would need some sort of bonding "stuff" when putting the 2 pipes together. When I took it off there appeared to be something there but it looked like a lead colour when you rub it. Any idea what that might be? Is copper grease gonna fill the gaps?

Oh so many questions.....I'm sure you can tell I'm inexperienced at all this stuff!!

There's a packing ring that is used to seal the join between the silencer and the outlet of the exhaust sub-chamber thingy. Part no: 18392MJ4670, price £5.75 from David Silver. If I remember correctly it's made from graphite, hence the "lead" colour.
