I think that the air valve is only for use when the shock has been serviced & not a DIY adjustment and they have Nitrogen (?) in them.
If you want firmer, either adjust the preload on the spring to reduce the amount of sag when you sit on the bike & help prevenmt it from bottoming out or adjust the compression adjuster (in) to reduce wallowing.
Otherwise (if you are carrying a lot of weight) you will need a heavier/stronger spring but the stock one is fine for solo touring or lightly laden 2 up.
