Touring Ideas for Summer - Austrian Alps

In case any of you are starting to think about tours down through France and Switzerland in the summer, don't discount the idea of Austria.

See attached link with some truly awesome roads and they are actually motorbike friendly places.

    Grossglockner High Alpine Road

There are four different routes in the drop down box at the top.

If it seems a bit far to drive then consider getting to Dussedorf and then overnight train to Salzburg with the bike. I did it last year (Vienna to Dusseldorf) and it was cheaper than the cost of the petrol!!!

If you see a 2001 blue TA with MRA Vario screen it might just be me as I am planning to do them all this summer.

    Have fun.

    J

I had a look at that site. Looks great. I could be interested in hopping along with you if the details, dates etc. fit.

When are you planning to go?
How long are you thinking of for the overall trip?
How long do you plan to be in that area?
How much is that train from dusseldorf to salzburg? (Approx. cost)

If it all stacks up then there could be 2 Transalps going at the same time!!

Well actually I sort of live in Austria so I am able to do these things in my weekends!

But if you are planning to come this way let me know and we could hook up.

Last time I did the train it was 88 EURO which included me, a bed, the bike and brakfast - bargain!

    Hia J,
That looks great. Have you any links giving details of the overnight + mototcycle train service ? I spoke to a guy in Sweden who is making his way to the Garmish BMW week-end this year. He gets to Hamburg and then he takes the train + bike all the way to Munich. It saves yonks of boring motorway riding and looks like a neat idea. I think the French Rail offers a similar service. I've never had the pleasure but it seems a nice idea. Specially for us elderley lemoney type

FYI - The train from Dusseldorf to Salzburg doesnt seem to charge more for individual bikes/less for more unlike the French and Germans who charge per bay regardless of how many bikes there are. Does anyone know if the Austrina train charges for cabins additionally?? £90 train return looks cheap!

Re: Touring Ideas for Summer - Austrian Alps

The €90 price for the train was a single trip from Vienna to Dusseldorf not a return. But still, it included me, the bike and couchette for the night and a basic breakfast. It took about 4 hours to get from Dusseldorf to Calais but I did get a bit lost trying to leave Dussedorf so could be a but quicker.

I think it was booked through German railways rather than Austrian but the site www.oebb.at lists the various motor rail routes from Austria (Salzburg, Villach and Vienna).

    Cheers

    J
