    Komedy horn button.

OK, so why does my horn work fine on my 650, but whenever I press the button at high speed, the fuse blows (thereby knocking out the indicators, rear and brake light and dashboard)? I think it may once have happened at high engine speed rather than high road speed, but it took me a while to put two and two together so I couldn't be sure.

What size fuse are you using?
My Transalp has a 15 Amp fuse in that circuit.

The first time it went I discovered that the butcher who owned it before me had put the 10A from the fan circuit in. Since then four 15A fuses have blown.

    Tell me about it!

It's just the ordinary horn (so that frankly, there is little point using it at speed ). I've trained myself not to toot to warn people but it would be nice to know what's going on.

    Re: Komedy horn button.

I used to have a bit of a horn / fuse blowing problem. Mine just went away after I shouted at it when it did it while being MOT'd (still got MOT though). Its gone now.

So, dunno really but try pulling the switch apart - you can get right into it if you try, have little screwdrivers, a lot of patience and like fiddling with things that shouldn't really be taken apart (I know this as I fixed my indicators switch this way and also looked at the horn switch to see if I could what had been causing my problem) - and see if something is shorting the switch contacts to the 'bars. Brush a bit of emery cloth between the contacts to clean them up - it only takes a bit of fluff or something to short it although I can't explain the high revs/low revs thing. Or follow the wire to the block connectors under the fairing /next to the speedo. That area on mine is rapidly becoming a corroded mess and I fully expect some weird leccy problems before long. I suppose also check the wires that come out the loom by the headstock and follow the wire to the horn itself looking for signs of rubbing leading to short circuits. Finally (or perhaps first coz its easiest) consider replacing the horn unit.

Or second finally if the switch is OK by-pass the loom from the block connector to see if that works. If it does leave it in place as the problem is probably hidden in the loom.

    good luck

If you have one use a multimeter on the circuit.
Remove fuse and put probe on one of the connections, place the other probe on the horn earth or bike earth to see if there is a power leak.

Had a similar problem on my baghira - found a split in wiring to horn that only touched the frame when bike was moving - so press horn whilst stopped - ok! Do it whilst moving - Bang!

Thanks everyone. Tred's the closest so far. I can't use a multimeter at 60mph so I may dodge that suggestion and just wire in a Strebel with a dedicated circuit.

I did not mean while you were moving just if the revs went high enough then you could tell if it was surge or a loose wire.
If you would like to pop around tomorrow evening I could help you locate the fault.
