    garmin mapsource use

    hi all,
changing over to garmin gps and quick question .
after trawling the numerouce sites will be using mapsorce on a garmin probably nuvi550 or similar , can you make your own routes on a pc via mapsorce then uplaod to either sd card etc or harddrive on gps for use on the above sat nav or am i better getting the older but trusted garmin streetpilot range.

must be able to use on foot as well as bike as I trex and mountain bike alot, thought abount the 60cx and the new oregon range but thing they are a bit offroad oriented but then again nothing fits all holes as they say.

I use Mapsource with the Zumo and also a 60CSx. No issues - excellent for planning trips

For walking routes and off road etc, I tend to use MemoryMap

I'd go with a handheld/outdoor type as they are so much more flexible. I'm using an Etrex with the 2008 road mapping and I hardly ever use my satnav (quest) anymore.
Cons are that you don't generally get any mapping with them, the audio signals are useless on a bike, battery life can be a nuisance and the screens are a little on the small side.
Pros are the flexibility and the waterproofing.
I'd not like to use a nuvi up a mountain but I don't mind using the etrex on the road.
Sorry I don't know about loading routes etc via mapsource. I was under the impression that the nuvis used preloaded cards and updated via the internet?

I have a 60CSX that i use for offroading and you can use mapsouce to plot routes, but i always use memorymap as it's far superior.

One thing they don't tell you when you buy the 60CSX is it's absolutly useless until you've bought/ downloaded Topo uk v2 for orienteering. Or for street navigation you will need either Metroguide or city navigator i have both of them but can't see what the difference is between them. The base map that it comes with is exactly that very very basic, useless to all degree's.

When road riding a use a Tomtom 510 it's far easier to use, cheaper and less hastle but no use off road.
