    Ignition Barrel Problem

    Folks

My recently acquired 650 Alp has a problem with the ignition barrel when I try to put it to the LOCK position. Here's what happens:

I turn the handlebars to the left, push the key down and turn it anti-clockwise. The key will go down when you push it but will not then turn that extra bit to enable the locking mechanism.

I have tried wiggling the handlebars when I have them turned left, I've used WD40, I have tried putting copper grease on the key and wiggling it around in the barrel but it makes no difference whatsoever.

    Any suggestions??

    Thanks
    Chris

make sure there's nothing stopping it turning to full stop,if a wire or some crud gets between the stops on the forks and the frame it won't engage as it still needs to turn a bit. I don't advise copper grease though it will just trap any crud in the barrel and keep it there. give it a bit of a flush out with a spray of brake cleaner and give it some time to dry out it evaporates but is flammable(with the battery disconnected of course) and then a mild spray with wd40.

Yes yes yes yes yes NO

wouldn't use any any form of oil in your barrel, after cleaning with brake cleaner use a dry graphite powder to lubricate, you can get a graphite grease that dries out completely within a few minutes but the powder is cheaper.

As for left full lock, check there is nothing in the way its quite easy to trap a cable or six in between the stops and damage them, I know this now

It is also possible that the locking mechanism has frozen.
Spray it with plenty of penetrating oil and then try it .
YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE
