A coupple of problems on maiden run

Hi all, have just got back from 2 days and just under 400 miles on my re built 88 TA, ride report and pictures to follow in appropriate forum.
All was basically good except for these 2 problems.
    1) New battery gave up starting bike, charging ok once its bump started but loses its voltage very quickly when stopped and ignition off. Tried the usual suspects, earth, connections, etc. tried to charge battery overnight on an optimate but after about an hour the red light came on with the ! mark, have taken battery back to where i bought it and they are checking it out in case faulty, but have any of you any other suggestions? I have fitted a 12 auxillary socket, not used due to this problem, and run the wiring in for some auxillary lights off the side light bulb, no lights fitted yet but wires well isolated from everything and each other.
    2) Losing a fair bit of oil from the crankcase breather. Oil level half way on dipstick (not screwed in) 200 miles later showing just below minimum. after a 20 mile sprint doing about 70mph you can see oil dripping quickly out of breather tube, there also seems to be an occasional blowing noise accompanied by a puff of oil mist.
    Any ideas?

The oil blowing out the breather sounds like a rings problem, have you got a compression tester?
As the battery, did you run a meter across the terminals when running?

Oh no i really didn't want to have to take the engine out again but Yep got a compression tester, its one i've had for years when i had problems with the rings in a mark 1 escort, but I assume it will do the same job on a bike? I suppose Mr Haynes will have the relevant readings?
If it is the rings is it the sort of job that could wait for the winter, I can put up with the expense of buying oil but really don't want to have the bike off the road so soon again

Ran a meter across the battery, its not a digital, but the needle showed around 14v with engine speed about 1200 rpm. When running with lights on they get brighter as the revs increase.

not to be a worrier but if it's blowing out half a sump full every few hundred miles it's not good, could be dodgy, especially if it gets on the rear tyre, your choice.....
compression should be between 157-185 psi(11-13 bar),if it is rings try some ring seal and cross fingers,it could be the valve guides and seals but you normally get white smoke with that, lots of it.

Been doing some reading (yep its a quite afternoon at work) on tinternet about ring seal and also engine restore, all sounds good and that it may help with problem if it is rings, until you read a small paragraph on the engine restore site that its not really suitable for wet clutches, if the ring seal does a similar job I asume that that wouldn't be good for clutch either? any thoughts
