Hi All
Doing a few maintenance bits this weekend. Speedo needle has been bouncing at slow speed for a while then stopped last week. Figured it was the cable but unfortunately its not that simple or cheap!
The nylon drive gear inside the speed drive unit on the front wheel has lost all its teeth.
On closer inspection the worm gear on the end of the speedo cable has worn its way into the aluminium casing and seized up and the nylon gear keeps turning..hence no teeth.
I figured if i could remove the worm gear I could repair the casing by turning up a bronze bush and pressing it in.
So after a bit of head scratching I drilled a hole in the casing below the bottom of the worm gear and punched the top bush and gear out. Turns out that the aluminium top is a knurled interference fit.
So its now in bits and tomorrow I will turn up a bush at work then order a new gear from wemoto £14
Sadly you cant really prevent this from happening. Mine was well greased its just that after 45k miles the little thrust washer under the gear disintegrates and thats all she wrote.
So if your speedo stops, check this and dont put another gear in until you check the worm gear for easy movement..
Cheers Dave
