So what is your average MPG on a mid 90's 600 Transalp.

Good roads in France, steady riding with Gentlemen riders as company, 48 -50. General gentle touring, not spirited, 46 -48, spirited riding keeping up with mates on sports bikes (but within my comfort zone) can be as low as low 40's average 45ish.

    85mph on a motorway, 40mpg or less.

The more I ride my 600 (The Goat) the more I love it.

That is similar to my 650. When in France riding at reasonable speeds non-motor-way I got an average of 48 MPG when riding on Motor-ways, it can get the low 40's, Using dual-carriage ways, I have had 56 MPG. My overall MPG is in the 45 MPG range.

    This must mean I'm normal.

I'll wait for a second opinion.

Re: Ignition timing advance to improve MPG

It's a long time since I had my 600 Alps & didn't work out the 'average' consumption, just on a tank by tank basis.
The fuel consumption of my ('95 N last model before the twin front discs) varied massively depending on riding style, low 50's riding hard & touching 70 mpg at best when riding steady.
If you are regularly getting low/sub 50's when riding steady, I'd have it checked out. As they can acheive substantially more.

As a contrast the 650 has always been relatively consistant at 50 - 55mpg or bang on 48mpg when it was standard.

My '89 Alp usually gives about 55 mpg.The best I have had is 62 mpg.I would describe my riding as steady,I don't like to cane the bike as it's 20 years old and uses a bit of oil under hard use.

Yup - everytime we filled up, BT was putting a few litres less in than I was. That's the one and only thing I really dislike about mine - xl650v4- the fuel consumption is diabolical. 20 year old mercs are giving better returns than I get - but I'm loath to start tinkering with stuff I have absolutely no understanding of.

One of the things I heard and liked about the Tenere sean has - about 250/270 miles between fillups. And I've ridden with sean. It's hard on the nerves let me tell ya!!!

As someone who loves long distance riding - the bigger the gap between fillups the better.

I can't at the moment ever see myself without the alp, but if anything were to do it - it would be petrol economy and tank range. Nothing else. I just love that bike.

Re: Ignition timing advance to improve MPG

i get reasonable fuel economy 50-55mpg under normal riding but when you start riding it prolonged on motorways it drops right off to low 40's (and i'm sure i can hear a guzzling sound similar to an old bath tub emptying)

i agree with you tom lots of motorway miles (6-7000 rpm continuous) is when the alp gets greedy and it is one of the few limiting factors of the bike that would make me consider replacing it with another bike...

thankfully though i like nadgery cracked and knackered backroads mostly and the transalp is so good on them that it outweighs it's greedy motorway manner....

a 6th gear would help a lot for straightline cruising mpg but i dont think meddling with extra-teeth on the front sprocket is a good idea because your compromising the bikes tractor-like pull at the bottom end which for me gives the bike its go-anywhere character..
