Throttle bodies/carburettors on honda xl700 transalp

Need help or directional advice here on synchronising the carburettors or throttle bodies on the Honda XL700 Transalp (2008 model).

I have read info on CARBTUNE....www.carbtune.com so am now keen to start balancing the carburettors/throttle bodies.

Can anyone explain how this is done and which is the reference carburettor ??

Point to note is that the owner manual suggests the mileage/time lapse for inspecting the carburettors.

    Any info appreciated.

    I will elaborate if required.

I have the HAYNES manual too but only for Transalp 600, 650 and 750. No idea where to get service/workshop manual for xl700 model.

    Much obliged.

    Hi there
You can get the manual from you friendly Honda Dealer, and it will probably need to be ordered at around £23. fat mal

Having Fuel injection means that in order to check for synchronization, you need a laptop and a specific program to read and adjust the fueling, as against just syncing the carbs on mortal bikes.

    OOOooooppppssssyyyy daisy,

owner manual does not claim XL700V has carburettor....confused www.hondaireland.com detail and Haynes manual for TA600, 650 and 750 with owner manual.

    Apologies there.

You might not be on the wong track (what makes you think the are out though ?)

Injected throttle bodies do have function for balancing/ synching - the PC programme is used for setting up mixtures etc taking readings from sensors -

I wld think it unlikely you can set the balance from a PC as this is the "mechanical end of the system" still - remember they are still controlled in the old fahioned way by cables ! (unless you get a new Aprilia fly by wire bike - christ that sort of tech wld worry me )

Mt GSX1400 has synch adjusters for the 4 bodies, so do my Guzzis. I cant see a TA being without ?

Check it out & you will find the answer !

    Thanks SILVALP,

I will get the service manual HONDA 62MFF00 shortly and see if it says anything about the throttle bodies.....I think that I saw something on YOU-TUBE about throttle bodies on a YAMAHA 400 being balanced/synchronised using a carbtune pro........anyway.......much obliged.

If it is your first attempt at a valve clearance, what are the chances of doing more bad than good to the bike ????.

Would you need to be seriously trained or is it just a matter of having a angled spanner, long nose pliers and some metric feeler guages ????...and the workshop manual too ???.

I have not yet done valves on my TA (been puttin it orf ) from what i read they as much of a B#####d as those on my VF1000F from years ago....and thats put me orf EVEN MORE

Its really a case of being accurate with valves, too loose & they rattle like my bones/ make the bike run poor.... but worse case scenario is Too Tight - in this instance they wont close off properly allowing the engine to a) spit back on compression thru the inlet valve orr worse allow Hot Exhaust Gases thru which can BURN OUT valve seats (ouch - expensive )

I wouldnt say you have to be "seriously trained" (after all there are plenty of dealer mech's out there who seem not to be - really !! Lots of us will not entrust bikes to dealers after "essential warranty servicing" is done. my LAST experience with my Trident was TWO official Dealers who COULD NOT diagnose a faulty coil !! First one changed carbs under warranty & second fitted new set of HT leads. Neither cured the prob so i tested the coils myself & found one to be out of tolerance - new coil & Hey Presto sorted !!. Sorry you got me on a "mute point"/ RAW Nerve

Basically if you have someone who can guide you there is no problem doing it - its fiddly as most bikes are awkward to get at the valves (except Guzzi's - love doin valves on mine as its Sooooooo Easy !!) & clearances are very small so not much room for error. You will find the knack (when tightening the lock nuts) of allowing the feelers to be loose fit because when you tighten the nut it "takes up some more slack as you nip it up"

This has on occasions caused me to pull my hair out but at the end of the day i know i will have done it right rather than entrust it to someone who dont give a toss as its not his/ her bike.

Just take yr time & you will succeed

When doing the Valves you adjust them and tighten them then check them again until you are satisfied. Do not rush the job. I adjusted mine then turned the engine through one cycle and rechecked them, knowing they are right means I now will not worry about them until I hear that rattle worsening, They do not need constant adjusting, not at the book intervals anyway.
