    Softer Throttle Springs

Due to having knackered joints (& weak right wrist) - Oi ! No Jokes i broke it as well

Am wonderin if i could fit weaker springs to the throttle as i have real trouble holding it open (i have a plastic throttle cruise attachment thingy but even using that i find it tough for any distance)

Haven't been into the "engine room" on the TA yet but wonder if i cld get weaker springs (i deal with excellent spring company @ work who i'm sure cld help)

Could the "Masters of TA ology" advise where the springs are on the bodies/ linkages - are they workin on throttle "cams".

    Anyone tried this before ?

The Springs are not that strong.
If you are struggling first try lubrication of the cables.
YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE

Aaaahhh SF so yr an old fashioned mech like me Seems a lotta rders dont bother with cable lubing (some say modern ones dont need it but i do ! Must admit i aven't done the TA yet (only clutch & that was smoother for it) Will give it a try anyway.

Last year i rode a friends Guzzi Spada & had to admit defeat after 20 miles Jeeez them Dellorto's have such strong springs im suprised them weedy italian men cld ever ride em My guzzis are both injected so pretty easy. My GSX1400 whilst TA like is easier cos ya dont need to open throttle that far to get a good turn of speed !!

The only other thing I would look at would be the linkages incase they were stiff.

    Re: Softer Throttle Springs

Hi, as mentioned, try lubing the cables to make sure is working as easily as it should - the throttles are not known to be heavy/tiresome.

The throttle return spring os on the R/H side of the R/H carb behind the TPS, you could remove this (couple of screws onto the carb body), behind which lies an 11mm (I think) nut on the end of the throttle shaft, if you ondo this, you may be able to take some of the preload out of the spring by 'unhooking' it & let it unwind half a turn or so.
Make sure that the spring returns the throttle completely with the engine running.......

I know this as I experimented with some 'other' carbs (long story...) which did have a sticky throttle & I managed to increase the spring tension using the above method - and ended up with a heavier throttle as a result!

    Re: Softer Throttle Springs

I have done what most of you Britts would call "murder" or "suicidal attempt" but it's a common procedure elsewhere in the world.

The push cable is really a useless part in the throttle mechanism and it gives it that extra dragging whilst rotating the grip. I took mine off as I did in all the XRs I've owned and never had a single problem.

The final result is just like getting a softer spring in the carbs. Even the engine's response is smoother when you accelerate or let go of the throttle .

    Try it

Aha ! You have answered a Question thats been in my mind for a year or more ! I.E - why the hell is a "Push Cable" needed

I will try detaching it & see result - maybe you have found my solution. I think my GXS1400 & TA are the only bikes i have owned in 35 years that have a "push cable" in addition to normal "pull" one.

Is it just a Modern fashion ?

A friend (of similair vintage to myself) & i were discussing why just last weekend so interesting to see your post soon after

    Thanks for the advice

Mine has run like this for years on the AT - just disconnected from the cable locator near the carbs

    Re: Softer Throttle Springs

The cable route is a short term fix to a longer term problem

You could build up the strength in your hand and wrist by using exersizes that we use for climbing

Get a piece of broom handle approx 15" long. Drill a hole in the middle (not down the length but from side to side) big enough to pass some string through. Use a length of string about 2 feet long. With the string pushed through the hole tie a knot in it. At the other end of the string put a weight on it - start with something light - like a small spice jar or roll of gaffa tape.

Now hold the peice of broom handle in your finger tips of both hands with your arms extended out in front of you and preferably at shoulder height or eye level. Using your fingers and thumbs start to roll the weight up and then roll it down. Repeat this both forwards and backwards several times. Aim to get to 3 sets of 10 reps and then increase the weight once this gets easier.

You will build the strenght back into your fingers, hand and wrist very quickly. It will also transform your riding and overcome any fatigue. Very simple but very effective.

    Regards

    Paul
