    Re: Newbie - Centre Stand?

Can also vote for for the Honda centrestand.
As for getting the bike easy up on it i can only repeat how i do it.
My previous bike ,a old BMW R80RT with about the same weight as the XL 700 i had never problems getting it on his centre stand.
With my XL 700 it's a backbreaking job ,for me anyway.
    So now i use a small piece of wood ,about 20cm x 10cm x 3cm.
    - Push the rearwheel on that ,keep the bike steady and push the centrestand down with your rightfoot.
    - Lefthand on the handlebar or even better on the crashbar (gives a lower grip).
    - Right hand on the pillionbar.
    - And pull the bike up and backwards while your rightfoot keeps pressure on the centrestand.
    I'am 1.70meter and 60 kilo's and this way it's a piece of cake.

    Enjoy

200 Quid Which is what I paid for the one on my bike...

Thanks for the heads up on the parts, he didn't seem to have any method of reduction, the screen was relativley (by percentage) cheaper than the stand and at wayy less than half price the fog lights were practically free !

Japes, no worries, I'm in no rush to get shot of it as have loads on. If you take it I'll reduce the price by the subscription to the forum, trust me it will be worth it

READ THIS ONLY IF YOU WON'T SUE ME WHEN IT GOES AoT....

This applies to the Baby Vara - but "should" work ok with other bikes...

When I got my baby I also wanted a centre stand for oiling and tensioning, but a mechanic showed me a neat trick for this once a month stuff.

1 - Put the bike on the side stand on a nice level surface and turn the steering hard left - poss. even lock it
2 - Place a the car jack under the right lug where the a stand would be fitted and start to open the jack (usually finger strength will do this)
3- Keep turning and the bike will start to lift until the rear wheel is just off the ground and the bike is balanced on the stand and the front wheel. This is more stable than it sounds.

In this position you can do your tensioning and cleaning/oiling.

NB - If you are wheel/chain tensioning then loosen the worst of the wheel nuts before you go near the jack

For the once a week oiling - simply find somewhere that can safely get oily (I use my work car park and the Chief Execs spot) . When the chain is warm - park your bike on the side stand and oil the inside of the bottom part of the chain, roll forward and repeat until it's all oiled. If you cover the chain in a cloth and spray carefully then there won't be any leaks. I've been doing this for three months with not a single spot on the ground... must try harder...

Or... Busters sell a rolling road thing for the rear wheel for £20.

    Re: Newbie - Centre Stand?

I bought the Busters "Rolling Road Thingy" - a right B#####d to get in my rucksack on a long run

If i am away from home i use the rollin back/ forth method

And the prop method if need to get the rear wheel up whilst away.

These will work for any bike i own in future too rather than buyin a specific centre stand that gets left on bike when sold.

Unless i keep the TA for impending old age

But Sod It - i can run the GSX1400 (just) until i'm really knackered Just not always in a plodding mood that the TA suits

Thanks to Grey... I tried pulling the bike up with the engine bar rather than handle bar tonight. That makes it so easy! OK everyone get engine bars with your centre stands!

Unfortunately Mr Dogmatick I have just had a massive reduction in pay this month and will have to cancel any thoughts of bits for my bike (well apart from the £3.69 Key Choob I have just ordered!). Thanks for offering it, if you still have it next month I may be able to take it off your hands.
    Cheers, John.
Ah ha ! You should have bought the cheaper bike !!! Just joking mate and couldnt resist it .

Not having much luck selling by the way. I took you advice and went classified but not even a sniff yet. Honda Transalp XL 700 VA 2008 on eBay (end time 19-Aug-09 10:05:46 BST)

    Re: Newbie - Centre Stand?

That is true Doug! Going for the more expensive bike has skinted me somewhat! Maybe I should have gone for the one with every extra that I also looked at. Still, I'm very happy with what I have!! Not looked at ebay since I got mine, I always stop looking when I've made a purchase to stop me seeing that better deal I should have waited for!

Not sure on the 'lean the bike over on the stand' method. Had thought of the 'buy one from Honda, use it as a pattern and then return it' method though! Probably more to it than it looks on the photo though.

For now I will make up something that uses the mounting points so I can jack it up.

Just looked at your ad Doug. You could try putting a 'Make me an offer' on it. You can set it to auto decline offers that are daft but accept ones that you would be happy with. Any offers inbetween those ammounts you will get a message so you can consider it and try and get them to barter a bit. I got loads of auto decline offers but quite few decent ones, one of which I was able to email and barter till we agreed on price.

    Good Luck!

Thanks for that. I was just looking at bike trader but will have a go at that as there are 13 watchers looking at it for some reason. They could /probably be dealers but your never know. I am sure its not my price it must be the colour. Which colour did you get ?
