    650 Transalp clutch rattle

    Hi,

I'm trying to help out a mate who has a 650 transalp which has developed a loud 'clutch' rattle.

I haven't heard or seen it yet but has anyone any tips on how to go about stripping the clutch cover off?

Any help would be great, TA! Shel

I think it is very similar to the Africa Twin.

    Cheers Stumpy

Cover's off now, only problem in sight really is the oil pump chain being 'very' slack!

An older thread states 10mm is about right so will check the clutch plates now

    TA!

The "SLACK" in the oil pump chain could produce a rattle, as could a worn clutch basket.

The basket is great, even if the bike has done 30K miles

Very slight waer/groove marks on 3 of 4 of the legs that fasten onto the outer cover that stick into the clutch basket

Chain wear for the oil pump is more like 15 mm than 10mm. Would this produce a sort of rattle when pulling the clutch lever in?

The friction plates are ok as are the spinners

    Help!!!

What about the release bearing? You probably checked that already though... the oil pump chain is kind of slack but it shouldn't be worn after 30k. I found the shock springs in the back of the basket loose on mine but when I replaced the basket the new ones were the same... worth checking the ouput shaft bearing and the front sprocket just in case the 'rattle' is being trasmitted from elsewhere.

Thanks Chris. The chain does look slack, even to the untrained eye but perhaps it'll be a waste of money changing this

One main thing that I haven't made clear is that the main noise/rattle is still there whilst not moving and gets very bad when pulling the clutch lever in

The clutch plates are in good condition, the bearing feels very smooth & tight. Perhaps a new one to make sure wouldn't go amiss

We did have a look at the springs in the clutch basket but they're going to be left alone now you've said that - Cheers mate
