600TA clutch rattle

My 87 Transalp has a rattling clutch when the lever is pulled in.
It's been stored for years and I finally got it back on the road with only 4000Km on the clock. I can't imagine that the clutch has given up so early but wonder if something could have worked itself loose.
It perfect when it's warmed up but until then it rattles like hell and gears are hard to engage.
It's not the normal clutch rattle that Honda's get but more like a handful of bolts being shaken in a tin! Any ideas?

If the bike was sitting for a long time it is possible the springs have rusted.
