i had the same problem on my 600,it was restricted to a 33bhp from new,
just used a craft knife and a bit of fine sandpaper to make the hole bigger!!!

Hi Brownie2. Just asking if you mean the carb inlet tubes?

think so m8, the rubber housing from the carb to the chamber, u could see that it was restricting the fuel, i think previously they used to put washers in but now i assume the idea is to change it, we just made the hole bigger, u could see where it was meant to be aswell, result, it now feels like an R1!

Sorry, I don't. I've searched for this info on the net myself but the serious technical info only seems to be available on Japanese sites (in Japanese, of course). The automatic translations aren't much use.

A while ago, I decided the filter needed changing and I ordered a XL600v filter from wemoto [thinking it would do the job] because most part suppliers don't list the XL400 . Anyway, wrong. Too much air being let in and performance went the same way as you describe.
I put the old one back in and now it's fine.
My dealer has ordered a new one directly from Honda; but it's not cheap @ approx. €40.
    Hi again Dal,
It's been a while, but the VT500EF aircleaner fixed all the problems. The bike now revs out freely, no power loss, and slightly better economy, I'm really stoked..
I must say a big thank you to you for heading me in the aircleaner direction and I hope other 400 owners don't get caught in the trap of thinking everything on the bike except the motor is the same as a 600??
Time to put on the winter ice spike tyres (required by law here in winter), Arctic Norway is now in the minus everyday!!

Er - might seem a daft question, but as a newcomer to Transalpdom, would it be fair to ask if ALL XL400v's from Japan are usually restricted? If not, what top end could these models reach? Mine seems a bit reluctant to rev, too...

Hi Baz, I checked my carb inlet rubbers to see if mine had been restricted, and no it wasn't, so I don't think that all imported 400's we're restricted. Dal (another member) put me onto checking the aircleaner as the 600 ones are different to the 400's (400 ones have only a small hole in the end). A VT500EF aircleaner is what is supposed to be used in the 400, and after swapping over from a brand new 600 filter to a VT500 one, the problem was solved.
Not sure about top end speed, but when I had the 600 filter in, it would just stop revving at about 100/110 k's, now I can see 140kph but I can honestly say I haven't been over that (Norway speed limit is 80 and if caught doing 30k's over the limit, it's a hefty fine and a 2 week visit behind bars)
Check out wemoto website and look at the VT500EF airfilter to see if it's the same as what you have in your bike..Hope this helps..
