    Bike lock.

    Hi,
I've just bought a TA 600 and need security.
I fancy a mechanical one ; disc, padlock , maybe with audible alarm, but what make ?
    £70.00 to spend.
    Any suggestions?
    John

Save up some more money; you spent a lot on the bike, so don't skimp on the lock. Almax do some really good stuff- phone them up and they normally knock a few quid off and give free postage.

Disc locks normally get forgotten and damage discs/callipers :/

    Re: Bike lock.

i suggest good quality lock and chain ( possibly ground anchor for home ) no alarm ( everyone ignores them and they tend to drain the battery ) . i have 2 disc locks with reminders attached ( springy jobs that hook onto brake / clutch levers ). try not to cut corners.........why spend a couple of grand on a bike and £20 on a lock and chain ?? i forked out £200 plus just for me chain and lock..........mainly because i want to keep the bike where i left it last !! good luck ade

Ed Zakkerly And another vote here for Almax. They're not cheap, but put one around your bike and through a good ground anchor, and an earthquake wont shift it

Check out the Motrax Vishas disklock

it did excellently in a Ride test a while back, stood up against some very expensive locks, and was one of the chepaest too, came out as the top recommendation. I have one, its on the heavy side, but a solid lump of kit. Fits my AT, and fitted my old baby vara... i cant comment on it fitting the TA though.

    Re: Bike lock.

You don't have to pay silly money for decent locks, don't forget the second hand market, I've picked up a range of disk and sprocket locks over the years, good condition and all the keys- what can go wrong(quality makes such as kryptonite sprocket barrel for about a fiver!)
Why sell old locks? well when I change my bike (more often than maybe I should) then certain locks don't fit the new spacings!

    Re: Bike lock.

I use a Oxford Large disc lock to hold the heavy duty chain together when attached to the bike in the garage on the ground anchor.

OXFORD BRUTE FORCE MOTORCYCLE GROUND ANCHOR on eBay (end time 30-Oct-09 16:02:05 GMT)

For work i use another disc lock and park it in a area where people are always walking by. But if i need to attach it to something i use this:

    Hein Gericke (UK) Ltd.

So don't discount the Oxford products since they may be cheaper but they still rate fairly high in the security reviews.
Also if using front disc locks it's worth getting a disc lock reminder like these:
OXFORD MOTORCYCLE MOTORBIKE DISC LOCK REMINDER CABLE on eBay (end time 27-Oct-09 14:23:21 GMT)

That way it will stop you make an embarrassing mistake and try riding off with the lock attached and also work as a visual deterrent for a passing bike thief.

    Re: Bike lock.

NEVER use a cable lock on anything you care about. The cable may be pretty strong, but where it joins isn't- pair of bolt croppers there and whatever you were 'securing' has gone into the back of a van.

Disc locks are handy but don't help when someone lifts the bike and hucks it in a van.

I'd avoid second hand chains- you don't know if someone has removed one of the links and replaced it with a weak link which they can later use to nick your bike. Disc locks should be fine second hand though.
