Question TA 700 '09 genuine Honda grip heater. Or not?

    Hi,

I have a grip heater installed on my new bike by Honda dealer, as an original accessory, but later I have realised that it looks different than in the Honda catalog (see mine below). Are there different Honda grip heaters? Does anyone have like the one I have?

Actually I have seen this model listed in an online shop as P&W grip heater, not Honda. And for a price much below Honda genuine one.

I don't know about the TA700's but the Honda grip heaters on my Varadero are a lot different to that. The switch has 3 small red LEDs that can be fully or half lit, giving 6 heat options. The switch also has a sensor in it to detect low current and switches off the grips - the lights flash when this happens. I am pretty sure all honda heated grips are like that.

In any case Oxford heated grips (in the UK) are loads better (and hotter) than the Honda one's.

I just took delivery of a new Transalp in the week with grip heaters from the dealer. As Austin says it has 3 LED's and looks like the one in the Honda catalogue....

Yep, sorry to say, my 09 700A came with heaters and they are the 3 LED type.

Am I missing something here? Should get heated grips???? Everyone seems to have them, and yet I have never felt the need. Go on then what are the benefits?

Benefits? Chiefly, warm hands on cold days or when you wish you'd worn warmer gloves! Secondary benefit discovered whilst getting soaked riding from Dublin to Dungiven (in Northern Ireland) to see the NW200 in May this year, help to dry out your gloves when you've taken them off and got wet hands re-fuelling - this worked really well with my Goretex gloves.

Of the 6 people who went to the NW200 only 2 had heated grips; guess which 2 were smiling most?

Money well spent in my book.

Certainly sounds like some obvious benefits Tim But I have to be honest and say I have never felt cold hands on a bike. I spent three years in Antarctica and the dog sledges and skidoos weren't fitted with heated grips either..... Go on.... We are all getting soft

Bluff - What temperatures did you ride? How long? Can you show us the magic gloves you use on the bike to keep warm?

10 C and my gloves get cold after 2 hours or so. I have standard handguards if you ask.

When it was 0-5 C I was riding a quad (80 kph max), no handgurds but I had windstopper inner gloves - my fingers were dying after one hour. Had to stop and warm up by the muffler every 15 minutes. That taught me to think of the grip heaters. But I might get some better gloves too. Goretex will stop chill from creeping inside the glove?

Temperatures could be as low as 20 below or so and all day really, although the day isn't that long in winter

The warmest gloves were wopping great gauntlets called bear paws but TBH most of the time Helly Hanson pile mitts with Belstaff outers (for waterproofing) did the job.

........ But that was then and this is now

I just have very hot hands.
